a few of the antique meerschaum tobacco pipes I have in my collection. They are true works of art as all are hand carved and one of a kind. Most date from pre WW2 to perhaps 1880. Meerschaum is a mineral (hydrous magnesium silicate) mined almost exclusively in Turkey and used primarily to make pipes.

All are the mineral meerschaum which when mined is pure white. Sometimes it is stained like the snakes but usually they will take on take on beautiful tone over the years from smoking and the nicotine soaking into them. Those colors range from tan to yellow, orange red brown and black.
Ive never seen a bone ore ivory pipe. I think they would burn. Meerschaum is naturally fireproof.

Your taste in Mantiques is impeccable. My Dad, a lifetime pipe smoker, had only one Meerschaum in his collection, and it was a rather prosaic modern piece. These are uniquely beautiful works of art; worthy of some fancy display photography (as if you ever had the time!)
I collect a lot of artistic things or at least things that I see requires an artistic/creative touch to produce, antique/vintage drafting tools for instance and antique hand made glass marbles.
Don't smoke but thought about trying out a pipe. I most definitely want to and have carved meerschaum. I have bought damaged and low quality pipes to practice on and have had great success re-carving them. need more tooling though. I have maybe 75 carved pipes.
