A lot of character development is planned well in advance - relationships, opinions, interactions, etc. Some of it, however, is written on the fly - such as Kharma's distaste for the little orange vegetable. I felt it made the exchange between the group a little more human :P

Apparently carrots were originally purple when they were brought to the European regions by the Moors, but thanks to national pride of the Netherlands and old fashioned 17th century genetic engineering, we see the orange colour of today.
Granted, I'm sure in the land of... um... whatever-world-or-continent-the-Caves-and-Critters-universe-resides-in, we can simply smile and say, "A mage did it."
