People tend to either love or hate Toothless' design. I'll admit, I wasn't crazy about the weird wormy face when I saw the first movie, but he grew on me. These wings are based on the bluish glow he got while challenging the Alpha in the second movie. And of course, that cool tail fin :3

Toothless has an interesting story behind him.
The other dragons had been designed by the previous director and his staff - when Dean Dubois and Chris Sanders were brought on board later, they kept most of those original designs, but Toothless was not yet done.
In the book, he was what the movie called a Terrible Terror. The team decided it would be far more dramatic to make him big and powerful enough for Hiccup to ride on, so the Night Fury was born. (Cressida Cowell later said she only WISHED she had invented that dragon for her books).
His physical features were heavily based off of axolotls, salamanders and other amphibians, which made for a very odd-looking dragon indeed. But the old cliche about "a great personality will win them over" was certainly true in Toothless' case. That combination of "bird" and "cat" with "really smart critter" won nearly everyone over.
Not least of which was me.
And yeah, the Godzilla Glow in the second movie was awesome. Toothless, like Hiccup, was coming of age, and he was finally growing into his full power.
Awesome job on a really great character, WF. I might have bought this one myself.
