The rare and beautiful Vaquita porpoise is in critical danger of extinction.
They estimate that there are only 100 left that inhabit the Gulf of Cali/Mexican waters.

Their main danger is being accidentally caught in local fishermen gillnets.
Clearwater Marine Aquarium has attempted to set forward an official movement to save the dolphin from extinction by starting a petition asking the President of Mexico to put a 2 year ban on gillnets which will hopefully relieve the stress on the species and allow them to begin re-population.
I took this to heart and decided to try and signal boost this movement as much as I can. I really think they are a beautiful species and it'd be worth the effort to help them. Please feel free to signal boost this as much as possible!

Luckily, the mexican government are trying to enforce all they can to make sure this beautiful creature still thrives, but unfortunately there are still illegal fishermen catching fish ((which are also an endangered species called totoaba,))
With the Vaquita, whilst the government are attempting to help, there are less than 30 fertile and old-enough-to-breed females left, so theres a lot of worry this conservation came too late. :(

Yeah but we can still try!
The human race can still come up with some pretty amazing results when we try. c:
But thank you for the extra info! I knew the Mexican government was trying to help them out but I didn't know about the Totoaba.
I pray that we still have some time to help them ^^

Mhm. As someone who's studied marine biology and been out and around my own waters on boats trying to enforce conservation, I really hope these pretty little things can be saved and dont have the same fate as the supposedly-extinct Baiji. I wish I could do work over there with them. :( and if you need or want any more information please feel free to ask. :)
The issue with banning something people do for livelihood is that they'll do it regardless, so Im not entirely sure if the gillnet ban would even work..as there would still be people doing it illegally. They'd have to get a patrol on the waters, and even then it could be difficult.
I forgot to mention before, but this is a gorgeous piece. I love how you drew it and the colours you used.

I would LOVE more information on anything really. Marine biology is a HUGE interest of mine and I've even considered going into marine biology alongside some art degrees and maybe working/opening a rescue center. Feel free to note me if you wanna chat! I don't bite c:
And thank you so much! I really wanted it to stand out and I'm trying to practice painting with color Tu T

Yeah I looked it up.
200 swim bladders could fetch a price of 3.6 million dollars as of last year...
Just because the Chinese find it valuable for things like fertility, etc. @_@;
And the Totoaba is a very beautiful animal.
It is a shame but...there's still hope! ^^ Never give up.
