My Eastern Hercules Beetle, Banana, passed away this morning. Over the past month or so he had been slowing down a lot, so we knew it was coming. He lived an insanely spoiled life though, constantly gorging himself on bananas and little bowls full of strawberry jam and molasses. I would decorate his enclosure with freshly picked flowers, which he loved to dig under and rearrange. I could never get a picture of him NOT covered in dirt, he looooooved digging and taking mud baths.
When I found him this morning, he was curled up in his bowl of molasses. Made me giggle a little, died just like he lived, a total fatass.
You were seriously an awesome, chill, goofy beetle, Banana. I'll miss you man.

Heck yeah beetle keepers!
Yeah, Dynastes tityus is native to my area, but I almost never see them in the wild for some reason. Banana was actually outside of a restaurant flipped over on his back on the sidewalk. I was terrified someone was going to step on him, so I took him home and just kinda... fell in love. He's actually the first beetle I had ever kept. Other than my chaco golden knee tarantula, the only experience I have with inverts are aquatics, both fresh and salt water. Banana was so goofy and awesome though that I really want to begin to keep more inverts of all kinds, I've always been a bug lover anyway. :P I just want to wait until the chaos of the holiday season is over with.

Take it your in the US then, i think all stick insects are illegal in most if not all parts, i think pretty much any plan eating invertebrates are so i would guess exotic beetles are restricted aswell.
The laws are much more leniant on predatory invertebrates though like tarantula's and preying mantids. I know the preying mantis hobby is booming in America, can send you some links if you like?
Mantids can be fairly easy and very entertaining to keep :D
Got about 50 species myself at the minute, stick and leaf insects, mantids, beetles, millipedes, snails, vinegaroons, roaches, and huntman spiders :P

Yep, down here in Alabama. Unfortunately there are a lot of invertebrates that are illegal here, which breaks my heart. Just like in the reptile hobby, people are stupid and just release their pets when they decide they don't want them anymore, or for inverts they don't properly dispose of potential fertile eggs, then that ruins everything for responsible owners. I was hoping I could find a shady backalley deal on a Giant African Land Snail that was plucked from the wilds in Florida (because I mean, this IS Alabama, people still sell alligator hatchlings under the table with no permits) but that might take a bit of searching, and just plain luck. Fines be damned, I want a giant snail!
I would love some links, though! Mantids are adorable, my mom even loves 'em. Also I'm so jealous of your collection, oh man. so, so jealous.

Lol, you might now want to ever mention anything shady like that even if its just a joke, i've been told apparently people have gotten investigated through people spying online via forums and what not.
But here's a great mantis orientated place for US folks, also has sections for other inverts, im on there as Morpheus uk ^_^

Yeah the laws here in europe are more relaxed seeing as almost nothing exotic can survive our winters :P

Your photography is absolutely beautiful! You should really upload some here! Of course I'm a hypocrite for saying that, I've been lazy and have just uploaded sort of random, crappy photos. After I update my website I just don't feel like uploading stuff anywhere else.
Thank you so much for the link though! And for any future advice!
