I've had the bad experience of meeting one that loved the share when I was 15.
I ended up with a box cutter on my tum because "she needed to teach me to be less afraid of blades".
He also cut, burned and jammed glitter my name on her arm.
... I'm still somewhat traumatized about that shit.

My entire musical taste evolved since then, is all.
Now I'm kind of a punk rock historian, I collect english glam records, listen to northen soul, 60's jamaican ska and reggae, 70's twotone, powerpop, new wave, and oi... so. Yeah. It's all kind of evolved into a 70's british youth cult taste.

I actually do feel that music from the 60s-80's is better, but that had a lot to do with the fact that by the nineties a lot of music become commodified and the music industry become a powerhouse by which to sell records.
What made soul and blues and rock and roll so incredible was that it wasn't a joke or an act; it was black voices, black struggles, a real scene, real musicians. Then what made punk so awesome is that it was so different, it was rejecting the predecided values of what music was "supposed to be" as dictated by white record companies of the 50's and before. It was originally a term by which to dictate anything that "was not" piled in with the rest.
Nowadays everything is postmodern, it's self-referential, it's a copy of a copy. Production and image has become the focus of music creation. Ignoring all the obvious money-making shit like mainstream hip hop, country pop and Britney, even so-called "bands" that cater to indie or electro crowds sound played-out, all shuffle about in the exact same manner, use the same chords, sing the same jaded shit.
Not to say that there aren't good musicians out there, or good song writers or performers, there are. But they're buried under all the muck. It's hard to be seen when everything else is so omnipresent.
I don't feel arrogant when I say that if there are good musicians out there, they've listened to the records I collect.

Hmmm...I like the conviction you have with music. I always thought of music more of a organic creature the changes and morphs with each artists imput. Different creatures for different genres, yes but all part of the same organisim.
I try and be as open as possible to different music. Its more the artistic feeling. If it moves me inside and if I can feel it. Rather than the politics behind it.
I guess the genre of music that I find that fissure you spoke about would be in Hip-Hop. The difference of those innovators of the artform and those in it just to make money. I can't be mad at those that do it for money. Do what you can, when you can with what you can.
