The gun can't know when the owner is about to die, so it has no time to become unbound. When the owner dies, it loses part of itself within that owner's soul because it partly shares its body with that of the owner.
If the owner decides to perform the "pleading ritual", then the process is more delicate.
Think of it as being the difference between shutting down a computer through the options rather than just unplugging it in the middle of an "important Windows update". ;)
