Oh neat! One thing I love about Krystal (apart from her obvious good looks) is that she's very frequently drawn, and that means you get to see her in SO many different styles. :) I have to say, this is my favourite so far. ^_^ Such an intentionally cute and playful pose. I like that you got all her markings, and I love the creativity for things like how the bottom of the bathing suit works. Wonderful work Kacey.
In a scene with background like this, I start with the background first, to set the overall tone and colors for the piece, and I work from light to dark with the markers, blending as I go. The detail that I can't get with the markers I go in afterwards with the acrylics.
This piece was fairly simple to conceptualize in terms of color, but when I am in doubt about coloration ideas for a piece, I do a digital color mockup, to see what it looks like in my imagined color palette, and I can make tweaks from there. I also can do a practice shadow map this way for complex lighting. And then I just follow my plan =).

Aww, even Kacey can't get Krystal on-model. Alty really should provide people with better reference. :<
The background is really nice. Were the photos I sent you of any use? The note never showed as 'read' on my side, and I didn't get a reply, but it was a busy time for you so I wasn't offended/worried. ^_^

These are the refs I always use

Really? <333 Aww... Apologies.
I'd supplement it with one of the official Krystal renders, Arwing Landing has some high resolution ones, but... huh. I guess the pose *morningstar drew her in makes the markings more confusing than they need to be. It's easy to get lost on the arm markings.

Hey =D
Sorry I didn't get to your note for a long time. I was busy for a while with the convention season... and then my notes piled up on me. I did download one of the rar's today and I wasn't able to get it open to look at the photos... but I suspect its something Noriko could help me figure out =). I do love to have more nature reference, and I thank you very much for thinking of me!
As for Krystal, I did look at multiple refs for assistance with the markings and such, though she is drawn in my normal furry style, rather than on model as an artistic choice =).

Excellent! Gotta hate the whole note backlog thing. @_@ Easy to feel overwhelmed. Yeah it was... right around Anthrocon that I shared them originally so I realized it'd be a while. You were definitely the first I thought of when it came to someone who could make use of them. :D To get them to work, you have to download all of them. Then, with all of them in the same folder, the rar becomes 'complete' and it can figure out how to open it. With huuuuge files like that, splitting it up allows for better download management.
Not her looks in terms of style, I make sure to never give artists a hassle about that. <3 It was in regards to the markings. They are quite close, so it was a friendly jab, but they are symmetrical across her body meaning her right arm should be reversed from what it is. "Arm markings are, from the front, in-to-out, []L. Leg markings are 2.5 spirals; starting inside, going up and back when standing, surrounded by small cardinal triangles. Back marking is ]|[ in the small of the back." It's like, one of Krystal's only non-style-driven features that makes her who she is (in my eyes) so it makes me a little sad to see so few artists even come close. I am at least happy you came very close. The arm marking is correct in its elements, the back marking is spot-on, and the leg markings is not excessively incorrect. I used to be like, the number one Krystal fan till Dwight and Alty came around (and I slowly lost interest as Nintendo deviated more and more from a respectful design choice on her). I still will always have an opinion on the execution of her markings, however, because it's a very mechanical thing and easy enough to replicate with the right level of care and knowledge. Heh. :D
