There are some artists that just seem for, lack of a better term, uncommissionable. It's totally understandable, though. They're extremely busy, talented artists. Plenty of folk want their art. As such, some artists just seem impossible to commission. Not that they are impossible.
I have a mental list of such artists. Some of which, I have a a goal to, at least once, commission. It dawned on me once, after hearing about exploits of getting commissions at cons, that perhaps the impossible wasn't impossible. It was just a matter of being at the right place at the right time.
I had made vague plans to go to Megaplex this year after it became apparent that AC was just not going to happen for me. I was kinda on the fence about Megaplex. Wasn't entirely sure if I'd go, because money reasons, and was still trying to save for a suit. Perhaps best to just forgo cons entirely for 2014. But, something nagged at me. TaniDaReal was going to be a guest at Megaplex. For me, she was on my bucket list of impossible artists to commission. Perhaps Megaplex was the right place and time? After all, Orlando isn't (that) far away. It was summer time. There were friends going. What the hell. I had some extra money. At least if I go, there might be a chance for an impossible commission. A slim chance.
Now, I'm not saying my entire purpose for going to Megaplex was to commission Tani. No, my main goal was friends. And then meet artists. Then commission Tani. I had a great time with friends. I really need to post a proper review of my time at Megaplex. Else this is what this description is turning into.
The goal to be with friends was met easily enough. I roomed with friends. Partied with friends. Almost got drunk with friends. I think. I miss them. They were a fun lot.
The meet artists goal was beyond met. Tani was there, of course, but so were artists like Golden Druid, who is actually a really fun person to chat with, and even Fox Amoore, who I wasn't expecting to be there because I don't know, but I got to meet him, and he's cool. And Scottish.
Now, the goal for commissioning Tani. Well, obviously, you know how that turned out, because you see the picture above. I commissioned TaniDaReal! Oh my God. I was not expecting that to happen. It was the only piece of art I got the whole con, but that's because I was saving to do that. First day I was there at the con, saw a panel Tani was doing about drawing and stuff. Well, missed most of the panel. I caught the end. It was still cool. Asked if she was doing sketches. Said she was pretty much booked until the next day. That's cool. Means there was still a chance. I try the next day. Still working away on what she needs to do. No need to bother her. But I was there one more day. I thought, why not give it a try before I leave. Apparently, she had time. And I had money, so it all worked out.
All I wanted was a sketch of my cheetah. And this is what I got. I absolutely love it. I know I say realistic styles are my go to style, but that doesn't mean I can't love a style like hers. She's brilliant, I feel. And seeing Skips in her style, it just works I think. It's fun. She drew him well. And it totally made the whole trip so much more awesome knowing I got to go home with Tani art in hand.
So, here's a check off of my bucket list. Commission Tani. Done. It's still hard to believe. I doubt I'll ever be able to again. But hey, I've got one, and that's what matters.
Super awesome big thanks to TaniDaReal, for putting up with my probably annoying persistence at commissioning her.
