Sequel to The Koopa Krew!
The Koopa king's march doesn't just stop with enslaving the Koopa forces, but his eyes are set on another prize now...
I hope you all enjoy, and I would love to hear what you all think! ^_^
Popping in the original Super Mario Bros was always a joy to Pete as he turned his NES on and hopped onto the couch, the lights were off and the night sounds of the city outside were dim as the familiar starting screen turned on. Several times through the year Pete would hold a little marathon of the classic Mario games, and yes he did consider the doki doki panic game to be Mario 2 along with Lost Levels. Now as he started up the game he watched as the familiar sprite of the goomba started towards Mario, and he ran over to hop on it, but just as he bounced off of the creature’s head his whole TV flashed with odd lights. Pete murmured under his breath cursing the old console as he got up to wiggle the cartridge. As he bent over the entertainment center he felt a strong tug. “What?” Pete asked, turning to see the screen suddenly burst into a spiral of pixels, the force yanking him into the television.
In the quiet living room the system blinked off, but somewhere far different a human landed with a thud. Pete groaned as he slowly raise himself up eyes adjusting to the bright light. When he could finally focus he couldn't believe what he was seeing. Just seconds before he was home enjoying a classic game and now in front of him were the same familiar bright green hills and scattered “?” blocks. If the scenery wasn't shocking enough the sudden appearance of bright blue robes stepping into his view made him bolt up. “What in the eight kingdoms are you?” A scratchy voice shouted in surprise, and turning his gaze up Pete gulped as he saw a somewhat familiar creature.
“A... are you... a MagiKoopa?!” Pete asked, his face draining of color as he slowly sat up.
The robed creature didn’t seem interested in seeing if he was okay, but instead to make him a crispy smear as it threw a fireball near him. “For Lord Bowser!” the MagiKoopa yelled, and Pete realized he had to get out of there. Jumping to his feet Pete sprinted off away from the creature, jumping from time to time in an attempt to avoid getting his feet toasted.
“Help!” he screamed, and never before had Pete wished that he had joined Track Team when they had offered him a spot. His breaths came heavy as he ran, but the MagiKoopa had hopped on his broom and was now coming in close until suddenly the creature was bounced back by what looked to be a line of small mushrooms in the ground.
“Curse you, Goombas! You wont be able to hide behind those mushrooms forever!” he screamed, and with a glare at Pete he flew off.
Pete just stared for a moment longer, not yet used to the strange new world. He may have remained in his daze for much longer if a small voice didn't chime in beside him. “Are you ok, sir?” the voice asked worriedly. Pete turned half expecting another koopa but instead seeing nothing. “Down here, sir.”
The voice continued as his gaze lowered. Standing before him almost indistinguishable from the other mushroom was a bright red creature with blue eyes and tiny black legs. “A…...toad?”
The creature shook its whole body, and Pete realized that it didn’t have arms. “Wait... are you...” he started, not sure if what he was about to suggest was nonsense or not. “A goomba?” he asked, not sure how to react he watched as the goomba bowed in agreement.
“Indeed I am, Sir! I am Mic the Goomba at your service. You’re very luck to have come this way as our boundaries that we’ve set up with our magic mushrooms protect all inside from the evil King Bowser’s minions!” the Goomba explained, smiling up at Pete as he tried to process.
“So... you don’t... work for Bowser?” The look on the Goomba’s face was almost one of hurt, and of fear.
“Of course not, Sir! We’re a peaceful sort. All we do here is tend to our fire flowers, and keep the peace within our kingdom. Our great King Goomba helps us as well!” he said, nodding to himself as Pete inspected the small creature that practically didn’t resemble a regular Goomba at all.
For Pete who’d played the Mario games he was expecting little brown creatures, but instead the bright little red creature seemed to do nothing but smile and be happy unlike their frowning counterparts in the games. “I hope I didn’t insult you,” he said hastily, feeling bad that he might’ve insulted the king little creature.
Mic seemed to be quick to forgive though as he just hopped in place happily. “It’s fine, Sir! May I ask your name? So that I might better converse with you.”
“Pete,” the human said, and the Goomba happily nodded with his whole body.
“A wonderful name, Pete! Now so that you might not be attacked by any more of The Evil King Bowser’s minions might I request that you spend the night in my village, and in the morning you may leave to go home.” The Goomba was so hospitable that Pete couldn't help but happily oblige, and soon he was leaving the magic mushrooms behind to follow after the little red creature.
“So I was just curious... why does Bowser have so many koopas just sitting outside of the village?” Pete asked, glancing back to see a small group trying to find a way in past the mushrooms.
Mic shivered in fear as he glanced back himself, and Pete frowned as he saw how distraught the question had made the Goomba. “Bowser... he want’s to take over our village, and all of us inside of it.”
Pete felt a shiver go down his spine, the mere idea and panicked expression in the goombas voice putting him on edge. “Why?” he asked, and the Goomba shook his head before smiling once more.
“That’s dark news. Let’s speak of it later, but for now let me show you around the village!” Even though his face looked cheerful Pete knew it was just a mask over the fear, but for now he just nodded and followed behind.
The village was almost as cheerful as its residence, patches of vibrant green flower beds dotted with red flower dominating most of the hillsides with tiny cottages crowning the tops. Just being in the warm village eased the ominous feeling hanging over the two as Mic waddled over to greet his friends.
“Mic! You've returned!” The left goomba said happily with a deeper voice. At first Pete couldn't tell any of the small creatures apart but then he began to notice the finer details. Unique spot patterns, beautiful kind eyes of every color, and some with small overbites.
“We are so glad you are safe, the koopas have been so persistent lately!” the smaller one chimed in waddling up and embracing mic the best they could with no hands. “Im sorry for worrying you, but I had to help our new guest” the gooma smiled looking up to the human.
Pete felt a little embarrassed as he waved down at the two Goomba smiled cheerfully up at him. “Hi, I’m Pete,” he said, watching as both Goomba bowed deeply before him.
“Welcome to our village, Pete! I’m Bran!” the deeper voiced Goomba said, Pete admired how green his eyes really were.
“Ditto! I’m Ses, it’s so nice to meet a friend of Mic’s!” the smaller one said, hopping up and down happily as he was excited to meet someone new. Pete almost felt appalled at himself now for ever thinking Goombas were evil, these creatures were so nice... “Mic, why don’t you bring our new friend to the fields? I’m sure he’d love to see our flowers,” Ses said, beaming as Mic nodded.
Pete walked along slowly to keep pace with the small creatures as they walked past various cottages and small storehouses one building seemed to stick out above the rest atop a large hill. At first glance he could have mistaken it for a large cottage but he quickly realized it was some sort of crude castle. “A castle?..” He whispered to himself the small goomba smiling and nodding keeping his voice low “Thats the castle of King Goomba our great ruler.” The other continuing to waddle along towards the fields as Ses spoke.
As they approached the field all of the Goombas gasped, and bowed before a small Goomba approaching. Pete blinked in surprise as a happy looking Goomba drew near, and also bowed to the Goomba who kneeled before him. “King Goomba, you look very strong today!” Mic said, beaming as he and the other Goomba rose.
Though he tried not to judge, Pete was shocked to realize the tiny Goomba was the king of the land. “He’s the king...?” he asked himself, and stood up straight as the small Goomba gazed up at him and smiled.
“Who is this large person?” the king asked, not sounding rude in the least as he gazed up and down the human. Though he was small Pete realized how beautiful the king was as he had delicate golden lines on the red of his body, and even the small white circles on his head seemed to be circled with the gold lines.
“Pete our new friend, your majesty,” Ses explained, barely larger than the king himself.
“Well, new friends are always welcome in my kingdom. You’ll always be safe here as long as I am still ruling!” He beamed as the small crowd gave small cheers and hushed compliments.
As the crowd praised their king, a single Goomba wasn't as he approached dizzily a determined look on his face as he pushed past to get to the king. “Y... your Majesty!” the Goomba shouted, and the king turned to watch as the Goomba stumbled out of the crowd..
“What is it, Gom?” the King asked, watching as his subject stumbled a bit dizzy. “Are you alright?”
“Yes, your Majesty,” the Goomba said, bowing before the king briefly. “I wanted to tell you that I received a gift from the Mushroom Kingdom handed near the border,” he caught his breath. “I dragged it all the way up to your castle. It’s a surprise just for you the messenger said,” the Goomba said, as he smiled he staired just past the king.
“Oh my..thats very kind of you Gom, I will investigate this post haste!” The king assured the strange goomba, Gom nodded slowly and bowed again before stumbling along the path back to the cottages.
“How strange…” The king mumbled to himself, before smiling back at his subjects. “It appears I am needed elsewhere, I wish you all the best of luck with your harvests.” The crowd gave their praises once more as the king waddled by making his way home as well.
“He’s really nice,” Pete said, smiling as he watched the King walk away. “So can I see the crops now?” he asked, and Mic nodded before leading the human on. They walked out of the dispersing crowd of Goombas, and walked right into the fields. Pete had seen Fire Flowers and Ice Flowers in the Mario games, but never before had he even imagined they’d be as beautiful as the things before him.
Mic approached a Fire Flower, and Pete found himself completely shocked as he watched the flower shimmer with a small halo of warmth, and he couldn’t deny how happy he felt just to look at its brilliance. Ses on the other hand approached an Ice Flower, and from where the flower touched the ground small icicles stood in testament to the flower’s chilled state. “These are our crops!” Mic said, beaming as Pete kneeled down beside the line of crops, and admired the impressive flowers.
“They are stunning,” Pete said in awe, even after all he had seen today, the mere sight of such beautiful flowers caused a sensation of such happiness in him. He realized how good these Goomba really were just through the simple planting of the awe inspiring plants, and he reached out to touch the Fire Flower. Stroking a petal caused a burst of warmth to flood his body, and along with it a sense of goodwill that the Goombas themselves seemed to send out just by being near them.
As he sat down by the flowers with the Goombas Pete clenched his hand tightly as he imagined the Koopa troops standing just outside of this peaceful village. “Why... why would anyone want to take a village that makes people so happy?”
“To get rid of hope I suppose...” Mic said, and he rubbed up against Pete causing the human to feel better. “Now why don’t we go off to bed for tonight. Tomorrow we can introduce you to more of the villagers before you have to go.”
For a moment Pete didn’t move as he stared at the Fire Flower, and finally he nodded as he pushed himself off of the soil. “Alright. Thank you for welcoming me into your village Mic, and you too Sec and Bran. I really appreciate everything you guys have been doing for me,” he said, and the four walked out of the fields.

King Goomba sighed and smiled, his duties complete for the day as he prepared to retire to his chambers where his subjects had moved the strange present. He made his way thru the small castle dismissing the various staff for the night to return to their families. “Rest well…” He said to each as he made his rounds, finally retiring to his personal chambers.
Just as Gom had said beforehand, sitting in the middle of the room was a package wrapped in lavash ribbon. “Impressive...” the King said, slowly circling the decorated package. He wiggled his little legs trying to get a glimpse of the writing on top, but sadly he could barely see the large bow adorning the top, defeated he tugged on the stray ribbon with his mouth and jumped back as the package fell neatly apart revealing two items. The more apparent of the two was an ornate crown that seemed to glow with power and warmth, while the other was a simple white note written in what appeared to be Princess Peach’s very own handwriting. “Truly a splendor...” the King said, rotating the crown with his foot, admiring the crown for a moment before reading the note.
“Dear, King Goomba,” the king smiled reading the note, admiring Princess Peach’s neat handwriting, it was too bad that the Goomba himself couldn’t write seeing as he lacked arms. “I know that it’s been long since we last spoke my friend, but recently I’ve heard reports from some of my close council that you’ve been feeling down due to a lack of presence,” the note went on, and King Goomba sighed sadly as he nodded to himself. Unlike his father and previous generations of the royal men, and much to his own shame King Goomba was very small, and he often was overlooked in crowds. Even his own subjects and royal peers could be completely unaware of his presence and it could be a time before they noticed him standing in their midst. “To rectify this saddening issue, upon this crown that I had my most masterful craftsman craft just for you, a spell has been placed with great care that will not only allow you to have the presence you so desire, but also make you a powerful King that many will admire.”
Shocked that the Princess had made him such a fine gift, King Goomba felt a tear flow from his eye as he looked at the glorious crown. “Thank you, Princess Peach...” he sniffled, and then with some effort he lurched his head under the crown and played a balancing act momentarily as he made sure it sat directly upon his head. As it settled upon the King’s head he smiled to himself as it felt warm upon his head, and so he walked over to a mirror in his room to admire the well crafted crown. “So very nice,” he said, pivoting from side to side as he admired the new accessory.
Having always been so small the King had never been that impressed with himself, and even though other Goombas pointed out the golden highlights on his body he had never loved his body that much. Now though as the crown started to glow he gasped in delight as he saw the magic already working, his body started to grow up to meet the height of the other regular Goombas. “Oh my! It’s working! It’s really working! Princess Peach, you’re magnificent!” he shouted, hopping up and down as he noticed a small mustache growing on the opposite sides of his lips. “Wow...” he said, bending in towards the mirror as he watched the grey little pieces of hair grow in. “I’m so... handsome,” he said, a feeling of sheer amazement of himself starting to fill him up, so much that he found that he couldn’t tear his own eyes away from his reflection.
He almost squealed in glee as he felt himself grow again, now the height of some of the largest goombas. “Everyone is going to be so surprised!” He chuckled to himself noticing how fierce his teeth had become. “Ow wow..” He whispered dragging up his lip with his tongue to see the curved spikey teeth. He felt concerned for a moment before he just smiled wide his eyes dimming a bit “Beautiful!”
Somewhere in the King’s mind he knew something was wrong, and he almost wanted to take off the beautiful crown... almost. His beautiful colors were starting to drain away, the beautiful gold stripes fading into his browning complexion. “Such a strong Goomba I’m becoming,” he chuckled, his voice deepening as he grew past even some of the tallest Goombas in his kingdom. “They’ll worship me,” he said, his ego growing as above his eyes angry looking eyebrows started to grow. “They’ll never look down on me agian” he said, admiring how large and savage he looked, sharp tusks starting to growing from his jaw.
His height shot up again now big as Bowser himself the koopa kings logo starting to glow red thru the crowns gem the kings own eyes reflecting the crimson color. A deep evil chuckle started to emanate from the kings chambers as his once happy aura shifted to a much more savage powerful presence, the plants in his room growing larger sharp thorns and toothy maws adorning the new piranha plants.

Waking up Pete stretched out on the pile of grass that Mic had been so nice to lay out for him. The Goomba’s hut was very cozy, and even though he was larger than a Goomba the house somehow seemed to accommodate him, and after the previous day he had given up on questioning the things he saw. “Mic?” he called out, crawling on his hands and knees the Goomba standing in the doorway looking perturbed. “Is something the matter, bud?”
Turning to look at Pete, Mic looked confused for a moment before shaking it away and obviously forcing his cheerful smile. “Yeah, I’m alright, Pete. Something this morning just feels... off,” he said, and glancing outside again he bit his lip for a moment before turning back to Pete. “Well shall we get some food? I’m hungrier than a Cheep Cheep,” he chuckled, and Pete let himself relax a bit more hearing his friend make such lighthearted jokes.
The air outside that had been so perfect the previous day seemed cold and damp this morning, an odd silence weighing down on the two as the once lively village was void of activity. “Quiet morning,” he said, glancing around for some form of life. It seemed as if the Goombas had slept in though, and he couldn’t blame them if they were stuck within the confines of the mushrooms hiding from Bowser’s troops. Where Mic had been happily chatty the day prior he seemed quiet today, and Pete just assumed he was still tired. “Mic, when do the others usually get up?”
“Two hours ago...” Mic said, his mouth barely moving as his eyes kept darting side to side in search of his friends. “I didn't wake you but this morning I saw some odd brown looking Goombas stomping around the huts, I couldn't recognize them..”
Pete just shrugged though, “Maybe they’re new and couldn't find their homes. Hey what if it’s Monday?” he asked, trying to lighten the mood for his friend. Mic didn’t seem to be in a super cheer mood though, and soon they finally came across another Goomba.
Mic seemed to lighten up at the sight of his friend jumping for joy as he called out waddling faster. “Bran!” he shouted with cheer that had been missing since the pair had started their walk, and Pete sighed in relief as the tension seemingly broke. “Bran, what happened to the others?”
Turning around Bran surprised them both as he growled in annoyance at their approach. “What do you two want?!” Bran’s tone was completely different from the prior day, and though he looked alright he seemed a bit...darker and stout? “Leave me alone, I’m not in the mood!”
Pushing past a hurt looking Mic the Goomba grumbled to himself angrily as he went towards the crop fields. “What was that all about?!” Pete yelled, angry that Bran had been so mean to his own friend. “Mic, are you alright?”
For a moment Mic’s face filled with a dark rage that scared Pete, but then a tear slipped from the Goomba’s eyes and he was back to normal. “Bran... what’s wrong with you?” he asked, sniffling as he sat down on the ground. Pete gasped in shock hearing his Goomba friend cry out, gently scooping up the small creature into his arms.
“Mic...” he said quietly, and he just held him close for a bit as the Goomba cried. It took a while for Mic to calm himself down, but after a few long minutes the tears stopped. “Are you alright?” he asked, setting the Goomba down gently.
“I’ve never seen any Goomba that angry,” Mic said, kicking at the dust sadly. “I hope Bran’s alright...” He sniffled staring down the path to the fields. Pete followed behind deeply concerned, a look of dazed determination
Mic stopped suddenly as he reached the edge of the fields, standing in the field were the Goombas, but by this point both Pete and Mic could tell something was very wrong. Instead of the colorful creatures that Pete had grown to know, and what Mic had grown up with were no brown angry creatures that were being bossed about by a giant Goomba. “Water them!” the giant Goomba laughed, his voice deep and evil.
“Yes, your Highness,” the Goombas cheered, their voices angry and dronelike.
It was like watching a nightmare, and Mic nearly cried out as he recognized two of the Goombas marching around watering their precious Fire and Ice Flowers with nasty looking water. “S... Ses, Bran!” he shouted out, and as the two brown Goombas watered some of the beautiful looking flowers, Pete and Mic watched in horror as the flower suddenly started trembling and grew nasty looking spikes on their stems, and their heads sprouted into pirahna plant heads. “Our Flowers!” Mic screamed, distraught to see such beautiful crops be destroyed.
Mic suddenly started sprinting towards his friends, tears flowing from his eyes as he watched his friends turn their gazes on him. Gone were the colorful eyes that he’d known, now they were black and angry. “King, we have a happy one!” Bran shouted, his eyebrows furrowed in a permanent angry gaze.
Turning his gaze from other Goombas in the process of changing the Flowers, the King marched over to where Mic was shaking angrily. “Oh you’re still so colorful,” the King sneered, and when Mic looked up he could see glowing inside of the jem in the King’s crown a Bowser symbol glowed. “I can fix that though,” the King laughed, and he started to kick dirt at Mic causing the Goomba to shout in pain.
“Hey, stop that!” Pete shouted, and he started to run towards them as well but then some piranha plants sprang up from the ground in front of him and surprisingly without biting off his arms they grabbed him tightly for him to watch. “Mic, run away!”
“K... King! Please you’ve been changed! Your crown, it’s changed you,” Mic shouted, blinking away pain as the dirt hit his face once more.
The King’s mind was just set on making the Goomba angry though, so he started shouting terrible names. “Stinky shroom! Rot brain!” he shouted, taking joy in talking down on the Goomba. Though Mic felt pain from the words he wasn’t going to be angry as he knew that it was just a spell or something.
From the border of the village Pete could hear a stomping noise, and he was able to turn to watch as hordes of Koopas started to march into the town. “No!” he screamed, tears rolling down his cheeks as he watched in sadness as the Mushroom Kingdom flag waving proudly was soon replaced with a Bowser flag. “How could you do this?!” he screamed at the King, but the Goomba just laughed.
“I’ve reconsidered an offer of partnership with the great King Bowser himself. We together will become the greatest force this soft land has ever seen,” King Goomba laughed, his eyes burning with red fire as he turned his gaze to Mic who still held his ground. “Mic, yes I remember you... I remember changing your friends...”
Mic froze up as he heard the King’s words. “You... no... I can still save them!” he shouted, smiling to himself as he knew that he could fix up this with his power of kindness.
“Yes... I did Bran first... I told him that no one loved him... I made him know how much of a loner he’s always been,” King Goomba said, his words like daggers pierced through Mic. “I told him the truth, and look at how loyal he is to me now,” he chuckled, gesturing with a nod of his head to Bran watering more of the once beautiful Flowers into pirahna plants. “Ses was even more fun as I made sure to pluck all of his precious little flowers right in front of him...”
Mic tried to keep his calm, but the King was speaking so cruely about his friends. About how he toruted them... he... he was growing angry. His bright colors were starting to dim, and his eyes were becoming darker. “Stop... stop talking about them!” he shouted, trying to keep his cool but it was becoming harder.
“Ses tried to stop me, but I stomped on a lot of them, and others I plucked out and spat them out just to let them wither and die,” King Goomba said, his voice become deeper and more evil as Mic started to change. “He tried so hard to protect them... but then... I stepped on the first Flower he ever planted. Then he became mine,” he said, and Mic roared in anger before something snapped.
The world went dark for a moment for the Goomba, and anger became his life. His King Goomba was so large... so proud... so evil. Mic felt himself falling, and he didn’t want to go back to being a weakling. Pete tried to shout to his friend, but the difference was so fast that he felt sick as he watched Mic shrink and become another brown Goomba. “King Goomba, I follow you!” Mic announced, his voice no longer happy go lucky.
“No, Mic!” Pete shouted, and watched as his friend picked up another one of the water cans full of black water, but rather than walk towards the unturned plans the Goomba, King, and the other corrupted Goombas turned towards Pete. The human watched in fear as the King drew near, grinning in that maniacal way as he stared down the human. “You... you’re evil!” he shouted, and the King just laughed.
“Yes! Yes I am evil, and I’m proud to be so! My eyes have been opened up to see hwo weak being good gets you, so starting from today on the Goombas are under the leadership of King Bowser! We will rule the world, and to make sure that you don’t get left out I’ve thought of a very special present for you,” the King said, his eyes flashing red as the Goombas started to pour the black water on Pete.
“S... stop! Mic... Ses... Bran! This isn’t you,” he shouted, the water touching his skin made him feel weird... it made him feel... evil... Where the water touched it started to become green, from regular flesh it started to become a bright green pulsing color. “Don’t do this, Mic. You were fighting just a few minutes ago,” he pleaded to his Goomba friend, but when the Goomba looked up he saw that Mic’s eyes were just like the rest.
“I follow his Highness Evil King Goomba, and we’ll take the world for our master Lord Bowser,” Mic announced, his voice dead with evil and anger. Mic could remember the brighter times, and when he was happy all the time, but... he enjoyed being angry and evil, and following his grand lord Bowser made him feel like he was part of a grand empire. “Now Pete, join his Majesty’s prized army.”
The water soaked through Pete saturating not only his skin, but his thoughts with darkness. At first Pete kept his home in mind, and remembering all the kindness that the Goombas had given him. How the MagiKoopas were evil, and they tried to kill him. Even so... with the water changing him he found himself becoming impressed by them rather than hating them, and an urge to join them was growing in his head. “Pour more, Goombas! Make him into my new Guardian!”
The word Guardian resonated with Pete and he moaned as his pants vanished and in its place his waist had become red and white polka dotted, and he was starting to grow out of the grip of the piranha who held him... his family. “F... family?” Pete asked, gripping his head he started to feel more and more connected to the plants. “They’re... my family,” he moaned, his eyes starting to dim as the evil was taking root inside of his mind.
“Yes they’re your family, Petey,” King Goomba said, and for a moment Pete felt a breakthrough in the evil, but with the new name it became even harder to resist as the urge to do evil for his King Goomba, and his Lord Bowser was becoming so enticing. “Petey, you’re a mighty Piranha Plant from our village, and you’ve been chosen by King Bowser to be one of his grand minions,” King Goomba said, and Petey nodded a few times as his stomach swelled out into vines. Petey flapped his arms a few times as they grew out into large leaves that resembled a venus fly trap, and Petey was feeling so good listening to the king.
As Petey’s head turned into a large Piranha Plant head he grinned dumbly as he nodded to his King. “King Goomba, Petey listen,” he said, his voice low and slow.
“Very... very good,” King Goomba laughed, and he told his minions to step back. “Petey, dig your roots into the ground. By the time Lord Bowser’s troops get here this field has to be filled with his new Piranha Plant army.” Petey nodded and as he landed his dug his legs into the soil, and the Goombas watched as a mass transformation of the flowers happened changing all of them into Piranha plants.
In the distance they could see the giant form of a Koopa, and King Goomba laughed as he saw him. “Here comes Lord Bowser, prepare to follow his orders Goombas. He’s the one who freed us from Mushroom Kingdom, and tomorrow we will help him conquer more of this land!”
