That is indeed rather sad to hear. But it's certainly not any fault of yours. It people are unable to recognize a mouse when they see one, that's their problem. It's like all the times I'm at the zoo, and I hear someone calling a lion a tiger, or the other way around.
As for the kangaroo, maybe they just watched an episode of Tom and Jerry, where Tom kept thinking the baby kangaroo was a giant mouse. :)
