“Chris! Jeffery! Aaron! Get over here!” Vince’s voice boomed early in the period as he watched his charges do their standard laps. One thing that he always hated to watch was when students dragged their feet during the run as though it were something that was beneath them. In some cases he knew it was because they honestly had trouble moving much faster than they were; his own species was well known for not being the fastest in the mile. Effort was something that he kept an eye out for and the three he called over were doing much more than just not jogging, they were dogging it. The three indicated walked over towards Vince which just made him more annoyed as he waited for them to approach.
“Yeah, Vince?” Jeffery Thompson the Espeon asked as he slouched to a stop in front of the Poli. Chris Flynn the Trapinch and Aaron A. Aaronson the Aron looked up a bit confused as to why they were called over. Vincent just sighed as he looked at them and then gave a glance to the Flareon who’d become his new assistant thanks to a nasty injury before he gave the trio another solid look.
“You three don’t like running I take it,” He stated more than asked as the Poli’s massive arms crossed over his chest. Chris and Aaron both gave little shrugs as they looked away.
“Well, running’s boring, coach,” Aaron finally answered as Chris nodded.
“Yeah, it’s not really all that useful to battling is it?” Chris asked. Jeffery just thrust his hands into his pockets as he looked very much like he didn’t want to be there.
“Guys!” Vince sighed again as he pinched the bridge of his nose, “What’d I tell you about the necessity of conditioning? How important it is to a battler?”
“Aren’t there more fun ways of getting in shape?” Chris asked, “Like hitting stuff?”
“Sure, there are plenty of fun ways,” Vince said as he finally looked at the three of them again, “In this case they’re going to be fun for me,” The trio looked at one another a little scared at that point but Vince just looked again to the Flareon at his side.
“Cinny, I’ve got a special job for you,” He said as the Flare in question turned her wheel chair to face him.
“What’s on your mind, coach?” She looked pleased already.
“I want you to take these guys out towards the track area and keep them moving the entire period,” Vince told her. The other three groaned as they heard this.
“But Vince!” Jeffery started to protest.
“No but Vince me!” The Poli quickly countered, “Your grade for the day is dependent on how well you kept moving and what Cinny tells me. So treat her with the same respect that you would me!” The three just looked down at their feet as they started to filter out of the gym and head towards the track area.
“And Cinny?” He quickly added to the Flare.
“Yeah, Coach?”
“Keep them moving but don’t go overboard. Okay?” Vince said as he looked to the rest of the students who just finished up their job.
“You can count on me!” She said as she turned and wheeled herself outside and towards where the other students had gone, “Wait for me you pansies!” Vince just let out another sigh but smiled a bit as she headed out after them. She had a lot to learn but she was at least very enthusiastic and showed a lot of promise.
“Hey! Wait up for me would you!” Cinny soon found her plan a little foiled as she pushed herself along as quickly as she could. The trio ahead of her stopped and looked back at the Flare as she called out to him; thankfully it didn’t take her that long to catch up. Eventually Cinny came to a rest just shy of them as she huffed and puffed to catch her breath.
“You guys can’t go and run without me making sure you’re moving!” She reminded them.
“Yeah, that’s something we were talking about, Cinny,” Aaron said as he looked towards the other two for a moment and then back to her.
“What do you mean?” Cinny asked a bit confused.
“We was talking,” Jeffery said, his hands thrust into his pants pockets, “What if we didn’t run and just say we did.”
“Uhh, that’s not the plan here guys. Vince said you had to keep moving,” Cinny reminded them.
“What if we did keep moving?” Chris asked, “Just…not in the running fashion that Vince seems to want us to,”
“I really don’t think he’d be too happy with that…” She said as she looked between the others a bit nervously.
“Vince is great and we know he’s trying to help us,” Jeffery followed up, “But…I really don’t want to run and I know these guys don’t want to either. And besides, you’re cool like that aren’t you?”
“Yeah!” Chris added, “You know I’m way into being a better battler and everything! Just think I can do it better without all the running,”
“Guys!” Cinny groaned, “Don’t ask me to do this!”
“C’mon, Cinny!” Aaron encouraged her, “Be a friend!”
“Yeah. You gotta see this is pointless too,” Jeffery piped in again. For a moment Cinny wavered as she looked between the three guys. It’d be very easy for her to just go along with the plan and then she’d be friends with these guys and they’d like her more. She wouldn’t mind having more people she could be on good terms with, that much was certain. It was when she was about to agree to the offer that she stopped and thought back to her father.
Mocha Swirl had been a top rated coach in the leagues back in his heyday, a highly sought after trainer that was well known for his hard but successful tactics. She’d been very young during that time and barely remembered any of it, especially since her father had passed on a mere five years ago. Cinny’s head lowered a bit as she thought about what she did remember; about the times she’d tagged along with him to go train some of the best battlers in the world. Her father had always been harsh on his charges but fair to them. She remembered how he always told them that when it came down to the last minutes of a battle and they’re still going but their opponents were dragging that’s when they’d appreciate everything he did for them. Eventually Cinnamon looked up from her reverie and shook her head at them.
“No,” She stated simply as the others looked at her a bit dumfounded.
“What do you mean no?” Aaron quickly asked in shock.
“I said no,” She said again, “Did I stutter?”
“But why not?!” Chris asked incredulously.
“Because if I did I’d be letting you down!” She told them before she sighed, “I’d be letting Vince down too. It’s like…it’s like my dad used to always say. That when you’re battling and it’s near the end that when you’re still fresh and you’re opponents are dragging…that’s when all this will be worth it,” The three looked between themselves before they looked back towards her still unsure of just what to say.
“Screw that!” Jeffery finally said, “I don’t even plan to be a professional battler!” Cinny’s eyes snapped onto the Espeon with a glare.
“Well how’d you like it if I told Vince you defied a direct order?” She shot back quickly. Jeffery stopped and blinked before he looked directly back at her.
“You wouldn’t…” He said in challenge.
“Try me,” The two ‘loutions glared at one another for several moments as Aaron and Chris looked on, unsure of what to do next. Eventually it was Jeffery who broke off the stare down and started to head towards the track.
“…whatever,” Was all he said as he thrust his hands back into his pockets and muttered to himself. Cinny let out a small breath and then smiled to herself for having held her ground in the face of so much pressure. Aaron and Chris just looked between each other before the latter started to the track as well. Aaron meanwhile moved to Cinny’s wheel chair and started to push her towards the field as well.
“Hey!” Cinny said in surprised as she started to move, “No thinking I’ll go easy on you because you’re being nice!” Aaron just chuckled in response.
“Nah. Just figured this would be faster,” Aaron responded and moved with some purpose. Cinny sat there for a moment before she smiled to herself again. The three has listened to her in some way and it seemed like at least Chris and Aaron had come around to her way of thinking. She settled in and prepared to watch them run and keep them motivated in any way she could.
“So how’d it go?” Vince asked as the final bell rang. Cinny had whipped the boys along nicely and the three had returned shortly before the period was set to end. Aaron, Chris and Jeffery panted when they returned and definitely looked like they’d kept moving most of the time after they left. The Flareon smiled like the cat who’d caught the canary as she nodded towards the coach.
“Went well!” She responded, “I had to push them some but I think they listened to me,” Vince chuckled in response and looked down at his clipboard for a moment.
“So they all keep their grade for the day?” He asked and glanced over towards her.
“I think so,” She said after a moment’s consideration, “Though Jeffery gave me a lot of lip at first,”
“He’s good at that,” The Poli said as he moved to stand behind Cinny’s wheelchair and started to push it, “There’s something I wanted to show you,” He said in answer before she could ask the question. Cinny just shrugged and went along for the ride, always happy to have someone else do the work for her when it came to the chair. The two stopped a short distance away from where Vince’s bag rested and the Poli walked over to start to rummage through it.
“Something I talked to your sisters about before,” He started to explain and pulled out a manila envelope which he handed towards the Flare. Cinny took it curiously and started to open it. Her breath caught as she pulled out the photos that rested inside as she realized what they were.
“It’s…it’s my dad,” She said as she shifted through them. Vincent nodded as he took a seat across from her.
“Like I told them, my dad did some training with yours back in the day,” He explained, “And I doubt you remember me but I was at the funeral five years ago with my parents,” Cinny’s eyes started to water as she looked over the half dozen pictures that showed her father as younger than she remembered him. In most of the photos was a Poliwrath that looked like an older and slimmer looking Vince as well as an occasional Blaziken who looked like he was losing his head-feathers at the time.
“My dad used to tell me that yours was one of the best,” Vince continued, “and that he owed Mocha a lot for his run through the Grand Championship the year he won it. When I found out you and your sisters started coming here I wanted to make copies of all the pictures I had to give you gals,” Cinny lowered her eyes as she fought back the tears. She missed her parents, even if she didn’t remember them as well as some of her other sisters. It’d been hard for each of them in their own way; for Cinnamon it’d been the fact that she’d had so little time with them compared to the rest of her family. To see him even in photo form, it was hard for her not to want to break down. A large hand found its way to her shoulder as Vince gave it a reassuring squeeze.
“I hope it doesn’t seem to forward of me,” He started again, “But one reason I’ve been working you during class is because I see a lot of the fire in you that my dad described in yours. I wanted to see if you were capable of adjusting to being a coach and see if you were interested in studying to become one,”
“You mean like dad?” She suddenly looked up at Vince, though some tears still clung to her eyes. The Poli nodded with a smile.
“I can already tell you’ve got the fire in you and some raw talent,” He said, “If you could get Jeffery to run then there’s definite promise in there,” The two laughed a bit.
“What’d I have to do to become a coach?” She asked after a moment’s thought.
“Switch your major over to Coaching,” He started, “I can help you with that. Can’t change any of your classes this term unfortunately, so you can’t pick up any new coaching courses until next term. But while you’re in my class I’ll have you helping me with my duties and teach you the basics. What do you say?” Cinny sat there and looked back down to the photos as the wheels in her mind turned. It was a tempting offer to say the least, and the thought of following in her father’s footsteps…
“Lemme think about it, okay coach?” Cinny said and didn’t quite meet his eyes because she didn’t want to disappoint him. Vince just nodded and still smiled.
“It’s a big decision, Cinnamon,” He assured her, “I don’t blame you for wanting to think it through. Go talk to your sister’s too and then let me know when you have an answers.” Cinny nodded and after a moment looked up towards the Poli.
“And coach?” She said quickly.
“Yeah, Cinny?”
“Thanks,” She said, “For the pictures and for the faith in me,” Vince smiled and stood as he patted her on the shoulder.
“Don’t mention it,” He said, “As far as the faith…wouldn’t have it if you didn’t give me reason to,” Vince started to walk off towards the offices so he could turn in his paperwork. Cinny watched him go for a moment before she turned her chair and started to wheel herself back towards her dorm. The little Flareon with the big heart had a lot to think on. She took pride in the job she’d done in the class and the way she’d convinced the guys to run even though they really didn’t want to. The thought of being able to push them harder in the future did make her smile a bit more and was a check in favor of following the Poli’s suggestion. Cinny shook her head and reminded herself she needed to think on it and maybe talk to her sisters about her options. For now, it was good to know that she might be good at something, especially if it allowed her carry on her dad’s legacy.
“Yeah, Vince?” Jeffery Thompson the Espeon asked as he slouched to a stop in front of the Poli. Chris Flynn the Trapinch and Aaron A.
