Well naturally shading would get the page to pop out more, especially when using digital color, but if you REALLY wanted to some contrast going then you'd want to play around with inking. (That way you wouldn't even need color) Play with Line-weight variation, (Heavier lines up front, stuff in the background will have lighter lines, etc.,) It'll work wonders.
