if you upload a gif to FA it makes the thumbnail (and preview image) out of whatever the contents of the last frame are, which means it the gif is optimized as it should be, the thumbnail is just gonna be whatever pixels happen to be changed on the last frame, and custom thumbnails haven't worked in years because FA is trash lol
