WARNING: VERY LONG STORY!!
First, the backstory:
After the discovery of the laughter energy, the scream energy became almost obsolete. Many energy companies adapted to the new situation. Of those who refused to turn to laughter, the majority merged into a single one, Fright Industries, that managed to keep the scream energy a valid and valuable source. The others, who stubbornly refused both options, went bankrupt and got absorbed by either one or another. Such was the case of Fear Co., Monsters Inc.'s former greatest rival, who was ironically bought back by them. Its employees adapted themselves to James Sullivan's direction, but some of them weren't happy about it. And one in particular was really not happy at all.
Johnny Worthington.
All his life, even since childhood, Johnny was pressurized by his father to follow in his footsteps and honor the family name. Even after he got a top job at Fear Co., Johnny kept being harassed by the old man to always be the best of all. And when Fear Co. was absorbed into Monsters Inc., it got worse: Worthington Sr. had nothing but contempt for the laughter energy, and ordered his son to try and 'solve this betrayal', even forbidding him the simpler option of resigning and going to Fright Industries.
He didn't care at all that Johnny had absolutely no way of doing anything except refusing to be a Laugher, which relegated him to menial jobs, which humiliated his prideful ego and earned him unfair contempt and anger from the old fart.
And Johnny, eventually, broke: all these years trying to earn his father's respect and love not only made him the asshole who led ROR back then, but also an over-achiever and someone irrationally afraid of failure and losing. The mere idea, even if he never showed it, terrified him.
And in his mind, that was all he was: a complete failure. His achievements were all for naught, his efforts to please his father had been useless from day one, the Worthington name was in the mud, and he had lost in everything and lost everything.
He was at the absolute lowest point, at the deepest of the pit of despair.
And when Mike Wasowski, still bearing some grudge over the Scare Games, decided to kick him while he was down, the purple monster snapped and vomited everything he had on the heart.
A confession that felt eerily familiar to the green, rotund monster.
"I'M A FAILURE!! I FAILED MY FAMILY!! YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW IT FEELS?!"
"A very good one, actually. Because I knew someone exactly like that."
The damages were much heavier than with Sulley, and Mike knew it'd take much more than a pep talk to heal these wounds. But he still decided to try.
During months, and with the help of Mike, Johnny learnt to accept that to lose or to fail was nothing to be afraid of. He learnt to accept that to be the best or to uphold a name wasn't worth it if you had to destroy yourself and others to do it.
And most importantly, he finally recognized his father for the controlling bastard he was, and one day gave him the tongue-lashing he so richly deserved. Sort of.
"That's funny. I wanted to yell at you, to hate you... But I can't. You still loved me at first. Before your father drove you to think of nothing but our name's reputation. I remember when I was a kid, how he treated you like you treated me after a while. I guess you wanted to tell him off too. But you didn't have the courage to do it. You never dared to say no... Well, I dare. That's unheard in this family, I know. Deal with it. It's my life. It belongs to me. Not to the Worthington name."
Today, Johnny is taking lessons to become a Laugher, has a rock-solid friendship with Mike and reconciled with Sulley. He still has a drive to be the number one and some of the smugness of before, but he's a much happier, nicer guy than before, and feels much better than during the rest of his life.
Now, the pic's story:
"Damn it, you piece of crap! Let it go!"
A few minutes before the ending of the day, one of the portals for doors jammed. Not only the door was stuck in it, but the energy canister too, even though it was full.
And now, Johnny was doing his job of maintaining the systems and was doing overtime trying to pry it out.
At least, he wasn't the only one: Sully was in his office working out some negotiations for a renovation of the oldest parts of the factory.
"Will... you... get... off!!"
Finally the canister was ripped from the portal. The shock was so brutal Johnny fell flat on the floor and the canister's neck went straight into his mouth.
Johnny was really pissed against that canister... A feeling that turned to frozen terror when he heard the hissing signifying that the neck had opened and that the canister was now emptying itself into him.
Once, at Fear Co., he saw the same misadventure happen to a tech. And to his shocked horror, the tech had started getting fatter as his body absorbed the energy, eventually becoming morbidly obese. He eventually turned back to normal, but Johnny never could forget that creepy moment.
And now it was happening to him.
In a quick, desperate rush, he managed to rip the canister out of his mouth and to close it, but he had absorbed some of it, he could feel it. He could feel that his shirt felt unusually tight on him and could swear that his arms had swelled.
Fearing the worst, he charged towards the big mirror used by the Laughers for last-minute practice. Seeing no visible difference, he removed his shirt... And stood astonished.
While he always had a nice bulk, it was now visible that his muscles were bigger than usual. Not by much, but enough to be noticeable.
I grew stronger?! He looked at the canister. Wait a minute, it's not scream energy, but laughter energy. And if...?
His curiosity piqued, Johnny put again the canister's neck in his mouth and reopened it slightly.
There was no doubt anymore: his muscles were slowly swelling larger.
A smile creeped on his mouth, and he opened fully the canister.
Immediately, the growth accelerated. He watched in the mirror his pecs bulge farther and farther, his abs go from 4 slightly visible to 6 huge, unmissable ones, his biceps grow humongous, his traps surge behind his head...
The intense pleasure he felt from it only intensified when he realized that he was also growing taller: the more it went, the more the canister seemed to shrink, going from almost as tall as him to hotdog-size.
Eventually, the canister was half-emptied, and its security lock activated. As he dropped it on the floor, Johnny noticed the portal now looked like a toy and, raising his hand, found out he could easily touch the ceiling even at its highest point. He quickly calculated that he had roughly tripled in height, and was now the proud owner of muscles that would make Mister Monstropolis look like an puny squirt.
He was still admiring himself in the mirror when a "plop" attracted his attention. He turned around and saw Sulley, staring at him with bulging eyes and his jaw dropped, a notebook on the floor.
Johnny's first reaction was to bite back a laugh at the face his boss was doing.
His second was to marvel at how tiny Sulley was now, compared to him.
His third was to notice, with a bit of incredulity and amusement, that the blue-furred CEO was starting to drool.
At this, he couldn't resist: he took a relaxed pose that still put his newfound titan-sized muscles on an impressive display, and pulled out the Worthington smile: that smug, sexy smile that meant "Yeah, I'm beefy. Enjoying the view?" and that made girls swoon at the sport lessons, back at the university.
For Sulley, it was too much. He fainted.
