Built by British Railways at Swindon in 1948/9, this vehicle was built for the district superintendent at Taunton. During the WSR's Autumn Steam Gala, Wolfie Danno, a non-furry friend and I travelled together in it all the way from Bishop's Lydeard (where this photo was taken) to Minehead, having paid a £5 supplement each.

Since Tom Rolt reopened the Talyllyn Railway in 1951, preserved railways, and indeed the societies that run them, sprung up like wild flowers. In other words, Britain takes railway preservation more seriously than any other country.

We Americans preserve the steam (& if so, older generation diesels) unrestored or restored. They are working on restoring some old coaches at the Strasburg Railroad.

I appreciate that, I understand that railway preservation has become a worldwide 'industry'. As much as I appreciate that, too, Britain, all the same, boasts the first railway in the world to be preserved, the Talyllyn Railway.
