Oronsk, the homeland (or present place of residence) of all of my characters.
Oronsk lays between two of the regional powers, the capitalist and formerly fascist Republic of Enculestia and the Union of Combined Tribal Soviets, which you may have guessed is communist. Indeed before the last war, about 40 years before present, Oronsk was part of the U.C.T.S. before being (re)given nominal independence as part of the peace treaty, this also created the client state of the Republic of Vadhiza. The northern Olshulta Peoples Tribal Soviet is also only about 40 years old, having not been organised along modern lines until then due to a nomadic population.
As you can see Oronsk is mostly covered in boreal forests other than at the very south where they clear enough to provide good farmland. The north is covered in taiga forests thinning to tundra in the far north.
Evrona water is the only large body for water though many rivers and streams flow down from the glacier topped mountains that almost completely ring the already hilly country.
The passes in the mountains provide the only easy gaps to travel east to west and vice-versa in the area and that makes both for good trading and an unfortunately attractive invasion route, as such the country has been invaded many times in its history, the threat has loomed again in recent years with the discovery of natural gas fields in the far north.
Railways exist mainly to serve the gas fields though they are starting to carry more passengers and other freight, especially livestock.
The south is only served by road, the main roads are often quite far from villages and settlements, meaning that a breakdown can require quite a hike to get assistance.
The capital, and only real city, is Evrona, where most of the government is based. It also has the only large airport, smaller grass or gravel airfields being common throughout the country.
Eskana is primarily a ski and mountain resort. It almost doubles in population during ski season
Most of my characters live in and around the small town of Elktuna. Famous mostly for the railway serviced stockyards that export reindeer to the east.
Ornessas main industry is processing the crops grown in the south alongside light industry, mostly making farming and forestry equipment.
Sanskaya a former nomad meeting place is now a "company town" for the families of those working in the gas industry.
The majority of the population lives scattered about in small villages and collective farms throughout the countryside.
For more information see this (The geography bit will probably need a slight re-write now) or any of the stories in my gallery.
I've been meaning to make this for ages and I finally got bored enough to give it a go and came away with something I'm sort of happy with.
I'm sure nobody else will really care but I had fun making this!
Comments welcome.
