Like all the regions of the Atlantic coast, the island of Oléron was invaded by the germans in 1942 with the line of demarcation. During the war, the germans has built bunkers on the coast and has installed some pieces of artillery.
Like a majority of the regions of France in 1945, the west coast was free but the island wasn't. In April 1945, the Général Leclerc, one of the french high officer of the FFL, received the order to recover the island. So, the 30th April 1945, the Résistance received the order to wreck the communications, open the fire on the germans patrols and to serve of guides for the landed soldiers. At 6.2am, the first soldiers has touched the sand of the beach Gatseau at the south east of the island. The day after, the 1st May 1945 at 10pm, Oléron is free, the battle had cost the life of 18 french soldiers and had wounded 55 other, 300 germans were killed and 125 other were taken as prisoners.
On the plate it's write: "Here, the 30th April 1945 has began the liberation of the Île d'Oléron"
