I'm doing experimental sketches using a recycled brown paper sketchpad and using white, sanguine and sepia pencils. I also used a red col-erase sketch pencil. Practicing more figure perspective and more dynamic angles--for two rather obvious reasons. Oh and lighting. I think my lighting needs work, too.
I'm gonna make more sketches on this paper too, it's really fun and challenging to use a midtone base with three or four colors instead of white and black, or digital color. I've found that doing color pictures while limiting what colors to use to be a good exercise in the creative process. It gives you a better understanding of how to make colors and lighting work. Did I mention how much I've come to love to use ebony pencils, too? They're as smooth as butter.

I love how you can see her curves and cleavage on this, and the brown background helps bring out her natural colors, since she's brown. Really brings her out too.
As for the ebony pencils, do they let you do gentle curves better? Cus a girl like that is all about the gentle curves and round things.

Yes, although I thought she looked orange in this picture since I couldn't get the scanner to do the original just right. As for your question: Yes! they do curve sooo much better. You can also do better shading and line width, and work much faster with practice. I used to use hard leads because they would stay sharp longer and the lead wouldn't break in my pocket when I traveled with them, but now I almost never use any pencil lighter than a 2B. I usually do all my rough sketches in blue pencil anyway. (Although in the case of this picture I used red, since blue line shows through the other colors.)
