Trip report: I tried this on my last outing, had a second (large) belt going around my waist outside my suit. I tucked the tip of my tail inside the belt, pressed against my right buttcheek. The tail was bent in two so that it went down three feet, hovered a few inches above the ground and then came back up, ending roughly at the same height where it began.
This worked great for walking around - I had both hands free and the tail never once left the belt.
HOWEVER, I don't plan on ever doing this again. When I removed the tail, I noticed the section of fur that was pressed against me was now horribly matted, extremely rough to the touch and impossible to brush. Knots had formed all over the fur, and that section of tail (and the section of bodysuit the tail was pressing against) were irremediably damaged.
It was a good idea, but it really didn't work for me.
