FBA story with Crystal Davis! Enjoy!
Monday, September 8
Patriot Stadium, Williamsburg, VA
The cheetah walked confidently to the press table, cameras popping all around here. Crystal Davis (Cheetah, SG) was used to this kind of attention by now. She was dressed in a smart grey business suit with a white blouse and matching skirt. She smoothed out the garment slightly as she sat down on the chair. A general blue backdrop was provided for her, as she requested. This wasn't as big as the upcoming Deercision of Dylan Redfield (Red Deer, F, DAK), but Davis thought that this was necessary to clear the air on some things.
She cleared her throat.
"Good morning. I called this press conference to announce that I've accepted the offer from the Williamsburg Minutemen."
The flashbulbs popped off more as she spoke those words. Unfazed, she continued, blinking her brown eyes.
"It was a tough decision and I had to give it a lot of thought. When the fourth offer came, I decided to speak with my father. He told me he was so proud of what I had accomplished already. He told me to follow my heart when it came to the decision; I would know the right answer if I listened, he said. I did listen as I thought it over.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine to receive so much attention from four teams. Each of them were more than kind with their pitches and I appreciate every one of them. Mr. Kitsura was very suave, it was a real pleasure having talks with Mrs. Turner and Seattle is a beautiful city. And I see now why Foo-Foo is the most interesting personality in the league," she said, a smile coming to her lips.
The reporters recording the conference were all asking themselves the same questions, though: while the Minutemen were aggressive with their first offer, the Pride, Thrust and Summit all joined in with similar contracts. The Thrust had more money per year and the Summit offered a longer deal.
"But I have my reasons for staying here in Williamsburg. From the first day I played here, I felt a sense of family in the locker room. They accepted me for what I want to accomplish in my career. When I suffered the tooth and jaw injury, the team quickly supported me and made sure I had everything I needed. While other teams would do the same, I felt everyone came together for me. Teo, Nick, Vera, Leonard, I can't thank them enough.
"It's been a real pleasure to play with Vera and I want to continue to do that. I think we make each other better. When I learned that my best friend in the world was going to return to the team, that was just icing on the cake," she said, grinning a little as she referred to Tina McCall (Fennec Fox, G, WIL).
Crystal ran a paw over the top of her head as she took a deep breath. "I wanted a home, a place where I could forge my own destiny, whatever that may be. It is Williamsburg. Thank you."
The cheetah stayed to receive questions from the reporters, but they were mainly reiterations from her speech. As she answered, she found she felt calm. More at peace. Happier, even.
It was a real weight off her shoulders, and at the same time, she couldn't wait to return wearing the Williamsburg red, white and blue.
