I read a similar plot devise, in the Gold Diggers Universe book called, "Pink Slip". In this case, the feud was over two brothers in the Ninja Clan. One, of the two brothers, must become leaders of the clan. The one that loses must stay inside the clan compound, forever has a slave.

You guessed it. The loser took a powder, [a ninja paralyzing powder], and left the doujo compound in dishonour.

Now when they meet, the brothers must always fight to the dead.

Some storyline... ugh.
