Marron Gwosdz (Arctic Vixen, G) stared at the fax machine as beeps and whirrs indicated it was working. Slowly, a black-and-white form eased out of the machine, bottom first. It was part of a form letter, it seemed. Then there were money amounts. Identical ones. Then the familar triangle and circle logo that the vixen certainly knew all too well.
She took the fax and read it over completely. She frowned and sighed through her nose.
She and Sam had to talk.

As per usual, Samuel Gwosdz (Red Fox, GM) was in his study at his desk. Over the last four years, he had decorated the room with some Minutemen memorabilia. A plastic 3-D W-M musket logo sat at the head of his desk and a bookcase filled with media guides and reports was to his right. A poster of Lenny Hicks (Coydog, EDM), Vera La Tiérra (Red Vixen, G, WIL), Teo Masalia (Black Panther, HWI) and Nick Nwabudike (Elephant, C, retired) and Damien Nathaniel (Hyena, F, WIL) hung on the wall. It reminded him how much things had changed in four years.
THUNK!
Suddenly, a piece of paper was thrust into his vision on the desk.
"Samuel, what is this?" Marron asked. Her tone was irritated.
Confused, the fox took the paper and began to read it. It was an offer sheet, from Baltimore Spirits general manager Mary Mince (wolf), with a small note.
"Mrs. Gwosdz,
I remember you as a rookie from your playing days. You were an extremely spirited player and played hard every day, much better than most think you should. I know this may be an extremely difficult decision for you to make, but I would like for you to consider playing for the Baltimore Spirits. We could use your inspiration as a vixen who has made a name for herself in this league.
Sincerely,
Mary Mince, Baltimore Spirits General Manager."
Sam's jaw dropped and he looked up at his wife. He saw irritation in her eyes.
"Well, what do you have to say to that?" she asked. The red fox scratched the back of his head, words suddenly leaving him.
"Well, I, er... it's... great that you got an offer..." he said, trying to say whatever came to his mind. Marron thrust her paws on the desk, nearly knocking the logo decoration to the floor.
THUNK!
"Is that all you have to say to me, Samuel Douglas Gwosdz?! We never once talked about me returning to the team! I had to watch you from a distance while you filled out the team. In my own bloody home! Watching you make offers to Crystal, Luna and Tina! Trading or Ezra, drafting Mikaylah and Rebecca! And not an offer for me! Where was I?!"
Sam stood up himself as her voice raised at him.
"I had to think how to overall improve the team, Marron! It's my job!"
"And I'm not a part of the plans? Not even after four years?"
"You're ALWAYS a part of the plans! This was a difficult situation for me! I'm sorry!!"
They stared at each other for thirty seconds. Marron then growled and whirled around. She sat in a nearby chair, folded her arms and turned away from her husband, not saying a word. Sam watched her do this silently. Slowly, he walked out from behind the desk.
"Marron... this is the most difficult decision I've ever had to make."
The vixen still said nothing. Sam walked behind the chair and gently put his paws on her shoulders.
"I love you more than anything, and I want to respect your decisions. You've made it clear to me that you want to continue your career."
"... but you didn't give me a chance to decide. There's no room for me here now thanks to the Underwood Rule."
Sam was silent at first, but he started to rub her shoulders. Several silent moments passed before he gathered the courage to speak up again.
"Marron... if you want to take the offer, I'll support you. No matter what, and no matter how hard it will be."
"And it will be hard," Marron said quietly. "New teammates, new city... being away from here... and you."
Sam just kept rubbing her shoulders. That was the self-evident truth; it would be the first time they would be majorly seperated in their short married lives.
"But you are right, Samuel. This is your job, and I know you support me."
She then stood up and turned to him, a smile finally on her lips.
"So you think you could stand the look of me in red, white and black?"
Sam grinned and embraced her. "Hon, I could stand the sight of you in anything. If you go, you're going to have to worry about your friends-slash-enemies."
The two giggled and Sam let go of the embrace.
"You gonna wait on the offer?"
"Uh-huh, I'll give it a week. I guess I should pack for a while. At least I know how to do that now, thanks to you giving me this job. Thank you for taking the chance on me, Samuel," she said, kissing him.
The red fox smiled back. "Best decision I ever made."
