Hamha:
Yesterday I met with my Voc Rehab Counselor. The meeting went great. Though there was one slight irritation.
OJT
To most this is an acronym for On the Job Training. Though for businesses hiring individuals with disabilities this equates to free money!
You read right. FREE MONEY!
So here's the deal. Voc Rehab helps individuals with special needs acquire the skills and tools to find employment. But apparently that isn't enough. Nope. Someone decided that we with special needs aren't good enough with our education, training, or experience. It doesn't matter how proven our determination to work is. Nope! Not enough! Companies want the state to pay them to hire us.
You read right. We special needs folks have to bride employers to get a job. Awesome, right?
This irritates me to no end. It isn't enough that I have a Masters in Business Administration, years of experience in Project Management, Team Building, Writing, Corporate Policies, etc. Nope! The state has to grease the palms of whomever I may hope to gain employment with so they'll "Give me a chance."
Words truly can't describe this dehumanizing practice. So a company won't just hire me for my skills. They won't hire me for my dedication. But they will hire me so long as they get 30 days of unpaid labor?
This is wrong at so many levels that I just don't know where to begin. What makes it worse is knowing two other things about "OJT". This being they now are using this palm greasing technique to help teenagers with disabilities get jobs and how company's often fail when it comes to what they are supposed to be doing with these so called "OJT". This being actual On the Job Training!
When I got my job at my soon-to-be ex-employer the state coughed up money for OJT and all I got was sat in the chair of solitude while they funneled me assignments they didn't want to do themselves nor understood how to do them. They just said, "Figure it out." And even when I did "Figure it out" they didn't care about what I found out!
But they still got paid by the state.
Honestly from an employer standpoint how can you go wrong? You get a hire who helps you fill your obligatory "Diversity Quota" while having the first month, two, or three totally paid for by the state! You don't even have to train the worker or give them assignments in which align with their skill set. You need only give them what you believe they are capable of and that's it. You don't like them after this period? No problem! Just treat the hire like they are the scum of the Earth until they "Voluntarily" quit before repeating the process with another aspiring individual with a special need who is desperate to prove to the world we are just as capable as everyone else who has no clue of what your ignorance has planned for them.
Extra bonus! You can do this with many individuals with special needs in a repetitive pattern so you keep your costs down, get the work you don't want to do done, and can put up PSA's (Public Service Announcements) bragging about how your company is "Proud" to employ so many individuals of diversity. It's a PR (Public Relations dream come true!
Although I can't 100% prove it I can most certainly assure you my soon-to-be ex-employer has found the perfect way to abuse this so called "OJT". How? They are hiring special needs students out of college on a contractual basis for a guaranteed period of no longer than one year. After which they either have to find work in the company or "Are able to use the skills they developed to seek employment elsewhere."
No doubt "OJT" comes into play as this individual is brought in at entry level pay with a near guarantee they won't last past the initial year. This gives my employer such a cost savings while waving a big flag that says, "We support special needs."
Really?
If you truly support the special needs community you'd hire us for our abilities without needing your palms greased. You'd hire us because you want a fresh look at how policies and procedures could be done. You'd hire us because we are no different than anybody else if truly empowered instead of treated like commodities to fill quotas while insisting the government pays you to test them out.
People with special needs aren't cars. Corporate America should not be allowed to get "Free Test Drives" of us. It's wrong. Wrong, wrong, WRONG!
So if anyone mentions "OJT" to you make sure you ask them exactly what they mean by it. Because to business it means "We get paid to not do anything to empower a disabled person while giving them the work we don't want to do ourselves."
This is yet another reason I absolutely despise my degree. I'm a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration. After learning all I have from being in the world of "Business" I hate it! I hate it with a passion. I hate knowing I am specialized in business practices and how I'll never be empowered to make any positive change since upper management has their heads so stuck up their own rumps they could care less about those who truly make a company great. Let alone bother to listen to a lowly blind guy who bothers to analyze the work environment to work with his team members and other departments to make things better.
Corporate America you can take OJT and shove it up your backside so hard that you throw it up like the daily verbal nonsensical vomit you spew day after day as you lie, cheat, back stab, and steal from those who are the real reason you have such cushy jobs, high pay, and a title you are so far from deserving.

The easiest way to make a huge difference is to require schools to educate people on diversity.
Diversity Focused is more a buzz word than an actual fact. If people could be properly educated to not fall into what is stereotypically said or show we with special needs could stand a chance.

Wel... Not entirely. It can seclude people if executed poorly. But it can also empower them if a solid plan is put in place, followed, and allows the learner to advance where once they did not.
The problem we really have is that the means, willingness, and resources exist. But folks who can properly execute all these in a positive way are in short supply. Society's dominantly "Blind Eye" doesn't help matters either. :(

Like I said, what is really sad.
is the fact that if someone with a "Disability" will be pull all over the media. Instead of condemning the Ableist perpetrators.
The Disability Rights Movement back in 1948, they busted their Chops to reach Equality for all. And yet Society has not learned its lesson.
The US is not even considered the Fairest place for Disability Communities anymore. that is a sad reality.
It is because of Society's strive for "Perfection" that people like me are treated as "Burdens" and Ignored, and left in the dark. As if we didnt Exist.

Oh, I know all about it. :(
I once worked as an Employment Recruiter. I'd get resumes all the time from people in California while hearing on the news how difficult it is for anyone to get a job over there. More particularly a job that can sustain a reasonable quality of life.
Unfortunately all we can do is our best. So often those of us who truly need the job are looked over as a result of someone being biased. They say Equal Opportunity Employer but it's impossible. Nobody can ever turn off their biases to look at someone objectively instead of subjectively. Though it is possible to better train people to do so. Sadly such training seems largely out of practice. :(

Sounds like the "Just business" attitude we've all come to know and loathe. :(
I've learned a lot about laws and requirements when it comes to workers. Particularly if you become physically unable to perform a particular job duty. It's simple really. They either bully you out or try to get you on SSDI with maybe a severance through "voluntary" resignation.
The company I am at now has a joke for its policy. This being how they are not required to assist an employee find a new position even after they tell you multiple times you are incapable of meeting the responsibilities. To top this off they say you have to apply internally for other positions in which do not state anywhere things like, "Ideal if you are this or that."
The cutest thing from my soon-to-be former employer is how they took away my Work From Home ability. This means I can't even look for internal job postings since all my security clearances and account access is through my work computer. :(
Though, as said before, "It's just business". *Sigh*

It's very counter productive. It actually, in my opinion, further encourages ignorance towards understanding individuals with special needs. Why should anyone have to be bribed to let you have a job? I can understand college taking money to make me do work but an employer is just insane. *Sigh*
I'm sad to hear that. Though I know this is often the case with those in Voc Rehab. Especially those who work for it whom don't have a special need of their own. :(
Did you request a new counselor? You are legally allowed to do that.
We with special needs are more than Sheltered Workshop employees. We possess a lot of amazing skills. The only catch is how we all need the right support and tools to show our latent talents.
Sadly, "Just Business..." practices fail to see us more than quota fillers to whom they can dispose of after doing the absolute, legally required adaptations before proudly calling out, "Hey, we tried! It's not our fault (s)he can't do his / her job!"

No it is definitely not fair. But sadly it is what it is right now. :(
As you are in a new state you may want to try and get a new counselor. Voc Rehab Counselors are the closest we truly have to having an Advocate for ourselves. They are able to intervene when things are at their worst so we can at least have a try instead of set up for failure.
Please keep me posted on your progress as you do what you can to empower yourself while gaining assistance from others to show how you, too, are far more than whatever labels go with you make you out to be.

This is an aspect of business that is despicable.

*Sighs and nods* I know. This is why I'm trying to raise awareness to it so that other folks don't befall a similar fate as I have.
It's mentally taxiing to be treated terribly for a condition that is out of your control over-and-over again. If sharing these entries with people can keep them from experiencing the same degree of trauma I'll be a happy Yoshi Duck. :)

You're most welcome.
It took me awhile to feel okay in doing what I'm doing through my journaling. At first glance it may come off as a lot of complaining about life. But I do strive to be more informative on my experiences than whining about them.
There are a lot of folks here to whom I've discussed a lot of things with. So much of what my journaling is based on is the collective wisdom I've gathered from friends here along with sharing my own. I've become a stronger person because of it while hopefully letting others know that sharing their feelings is a good thing. Especially when you know what you share could potentially help someone else avoid falling into a bad circumstance like you did. :)
