They were walking down the hall, striding with a purpose and pride, all three Sumisu, with Lee leading the charge, and Faith looking confusedly back at René as they went along the hospital corridor... it couldn't be, could it?
It had been all so sudden... one moment, Faith, René and Su-Lin were at the table conversing, enjoying a drink a day after the amazing experience with the crystal and Vera's past and Rene was showing off the fuku Faith got him...and then the next, Lee had arrived signaling they had to go, so quickly. And without a word otherwise, or any explanation... here he had brought them.
René looked hopelessly lost as he follows Lee and the others through the hospital. He knows where they're going...just not why.
“René?” Lee suddenly broke his silence, as they kept moving, past the many looks of nurses, and murmurs of uncertainty.
“Y-yes?”
“I apologize, for making you wait so long for this moment.” He spoke, with a certain solemnity to his voice. “But I felt it was best not to act until I was sure of all the facts.”
“Facts?”
Faith said nothing to interrupt her father, but suddenly looked to René, more than certain now what Lee meant.
“I have spent much time away from the Factory in the city...asking questions, finding what truth I could regarding the incident involving your mother.“ Lee stated. Indeed the Ninetales had a penchant for suddenly vanishing for hours without end. “Only yesterday did I manage to acquire a copy of your mother's medical notes.”
René's eyes widened as he attempted to take that in. “W-why would you want those?! I could've gotten them if you wanted me to--”
The Ninetales looked at him, only offering the smallest of nods. “I did not wish to give you false hope, until I could be certain where we stand.”
“...and where do we stand, sir?” René asked. Lee took a moment... considering, before that wry smirk overtook his features.
“I believe, we are ready to attempt something quite spectacular.”
“I-I don't understand...”
“René, what Lee means, I think... is that we are ready to try and wake her up.” Su-Lin explained.
René's eyes grew as wide as saucers. “M-mom? Y...you can DO that?”
Faith grinned at him. “I may not have been able to do anything last time... but my mother and father are a different matter!” René's jaw dropped and he spoke reverently.
“I would never be able to thank you for this...”
The girl held her grin still. “You're still getting used to the concept of 'family', aren't you?” She said softly.
René started crying silently, tears cutting paths through the fur on his cheeks. “P-please...just..wake up mom.”
“We're here.” Lee declared, striding in with a purpose, opening the doors with both paws... so hard and prepared...yet, he took on a calmer appearance, as he looked to the figure lying in bed, as if lost in dreams.
Seeing them entering Vera's room, a chansy nurse moved to intercept them. “Sir? Sir! You can't enter that room without medical permission!” She moved to bar them entry. The Ninetales stood there, regarding for a moment, before suddenly sidestepping to clear view for René, gesturing a paw as he bowed slowly.
“I would assume, you are familiar with Vera's young boy?”
The nurse looked at René in confusion. “Y-Yes, I know René...but you still have to tell me why you're coming here! I've never seen you before.”
From nowhere, the mon apparated a simple card. ”We are family consultants, contacted by the boy as specialists, if you'll pardon the sudden intrusion, we came to merely check his mother's condition.” He bowed again.
That left the nurse gaping. “I--I haven't heard anything about this! I'll have to check this with my supervisor--”
“Please do.” He remained bowed, waiting for her to leave.
René tugged on her arm, begging. “Please? It's going to be all right...I promise.” Still looking uncertain, the nurse moved off, clearing the way.
The Ninetales' eyes shifted quickly after her, and then nodded, gesturing them all forward. “Quickly now... I doubt the good doctors will be very accepting of the ways of Aura...”
René quickly followed them inside and looked at his mother with a hopeful--and still fearful—yearning. “I-I hope this works...”
“I can see that one-” Faith stopped, halfway inside the door, as Lee suddenly held a paw up to stop her.
“Faith, you must await at the door.”
The girl looked at her father, then René, then her father again. “But I-”
“You're not strong enough for this, Faith... and you are needed to guard these doors... one simple slip of concentration... one interruption, could prove drastically fatal to Vera...” Lee said solemnly. Su-Lin said nothing, already moving aside Vera... her eyes scanning over the Ninetales...already her eyes glistening over blue. “She's definitely here...”
Faith took one last look at René... and Vera, before nodding suddenly “I'll keep them back as long as I can.”
The Ninetales nodded diligently, watching his daughter quickly take a spare IV pole, trying to bar the doors shut and work on creating her own defenses, while he returned to the others. “René?”
“Wh-what should I do?” He asked Lee,
“I need you to decide.” The Ninetales looked at him in full seriousness. “There is no certain guarantee of success here... and what we do now, carries indeed a certain amount of risk. We will do nothing: unless you wish we try.”
René looked down. Could he--should he, risk his mom's life? He didn't know if this would--could--work! But the chance for him to have his mom back....René's eyes watered. “Please....bring my mom back to me.”
The elder Ninetales nodded solemnly. “Very well, René... then please... join me and Su-Lin at your mother's side.” His knees shaking, René did as he was told, standing between Su-Lin and Lee alongside Vera's bed. The Ninetales glanced down, opposite his wife... looking upon Vera's form... looking deep within her, before taking a deep breath. “René... I want you to hold your mother's hand.”
“Y-yes. Okay.” He reached out with a trembling hand to hold his mom's hand.
Lee took another breath, regulating himself it seemed. “I will explain quickly...You are your mother's rock, her anchor.... you are one of the things she most dearly holds onto... and key to bringing her back. Su-Lin and I will begin to manipulate our Aura into her... attempting to merge our Aura in synch with your mothers... and try to revive her strength...”
“---As we do so... she will become slowly more aware... not enough to awaken... but enough to become aware of her surroundings.” Su-Lin added.
“When we have reached this peak: you must try and call her, and try to call her back...If she will follow any voice... of any mon... it is yours.” Lee said solemnly. René said nothing, blinking back tears. The Ninetales took one last breath. “Are you ready, René?”
Taking a huge breath of his own, René exhaled. “Ready”
A nod, as Lee looked to his wife. “Su-Lin?”
She exhaled. “Ready”.
And together, their paws reached out, eyes closed... as she murmured beneath her breath... and he...”The Power of Aura will guide us.” And suddenly, Su-Lin's gloves glinted upon their gems, and the same glowing pattern emerged on Lee's paw... as the pair both held their spheres of energy... and began to hold them towards one another.
René mumbled, half-prayer, half-mantra: “Please come back to me mom...please come back to me...”
Together, they reached out, as if to clasp paws...but stopped short...as the two spheres met in the middle... and formed a single orb, that began to throb gently...its surface moving with a tension, with a pulse, like a heartbeat. Slowly... they pushed down with both palms, until they pressed upon the sides of Vera's stomach, the ball vanishing harmlessly beneath the bedsheets... but suddenly... instantly, the machines around them began to spike!
The two seemed lost in mantras... as Vera's heart rate became erratic, her signs changing rapidly, as the pair's expressions changed into looks of great concentration! And then, slowly, slowly... it began to stabilize... rising... as even René would feel it now... the feeling of power that made the fur on the back of his neck bristle... the sensation of a power... of a life... being slowly rekindled within his mother's body...
René looked on in horror at his mom's heart rate goes all over the place. The spike caused something of a clamor outside as a medical team starts hurrying over.
Instantly, the girl took her spot... and from her robes, she pulled free the talismans of Imprison, and with rapid succession, began to write, as fast as she could with her calligraphic brush, throwing them all over the seals of the door, looking to jam them tight and give them some spare time!
From outside came muffled shouting as someone called for a janitor or something to force the door. René looked on worriedly on his mom's condition.
Some of the machines still remained erratic... but her heart rate... Vera's heart... his mothers... was rising... as the thrum became almost audible to René, of a heartbeat. Strong, and rising, as a warmth began to spread into her, moving out over her body... until René would even feel it in her paw!
And now, with his expression screwed up... just holding and compensating for Su-Lin's almost pained expression, holding their Aura in synch as much as they could with Vera. “René, now, call to her!”
He absently tightened his grip on her paw. “Mom? Can you hear me? It's....it's Reynard. Please....wake up mom. I need you...Please...come back...”
The words oscillated, like an echo amplified through their Aura... being carried through them, into Vera's very being... all they could do was hold her there... it was René who would have to pull her back out!
Faith was biting her lip, trying not to turn back, throwing more and more Imprison seals upon the door to try and jam it, as the persistent staff were certainly putting her efforts to the test!!
René implored, he pleaded, he begged: ”Please mom...please wake up....I need you back!”
“The power of Aura is with us... The power of Aura is with us...” He kept repeating, holding his mantra... still doing alright... but Su-Lin seemed to be suffering... only holding by his inspiration alone!
And the doors suddenly bulged out, the seals ripping, as the staff on the other side of the door suddenly rammed something into them!!! The girl leaped back, trying to avoid yelping... throwing herself at the doors also. “René... keep trying!!” She threw her arms up, gems glinting, as a wide barrier of blue suddenly appeared between them, casting a shield of Protect, as she tried to block the door entirely with her body now!
“Mom, PLEASE! Listen to me! Come back! Follow my voice! Come back! Please....” René whimpered as he started to cry, his hope failing.
“Please... hear him...” She murmured, pained sounding, as a crackle of feedback began to trickle over her paws, back into her gloves and arms, now shaking!
René continued to extort and plead, again and again, nonstop. A tear rolled down his cheek and onto his mother's face. The girl held her space, as her shield was battered, again and again, objects smashing through the door, hitting the shield now, as it began to flicker desperately, gritting her teeth! And he... he could only hold, trying to compensate as best as he could for Su-Lin, trying to hold the feedback from sending her back from Vera!
And then... finally... the shield cracked, suddenly, as she cried out, suddenly smacked by the doors... and hitting the floor, raising her arms, as she hit the floor, a distinct cracking sound, with a strangled gasp that crawled out of her throat, clutching at her arm. They were about to burst through! René whirled back and forth from his mom to the door, his face frantic. “Mommy, please come back! You have to, now!”
“Hear your boy, Vera!” The Ninetales cried out... as suddenly, he sent a final pulse into her, trying to give her a jolt with Su-Lin to try and spike her awaRenéss. And she joined as well, her head turning away as the feedback burst through her arms, and she still forced herself to try and hold the synch.
And she, despite her arm, shoved herself at the door, holding it, even as her arm shook, crying out in pain, but gritting her teeth, trying to hold it, if only for one more moment!
René frantically gave one last heartfelt plea “MOM!”
A sudden shuddering sent a tremor through Vera's body, her hand tightening on René's. Finally...FINALLY....her eyelids flutter. “Re-reynard?” Her voice was a weak, dull rasping sound but it was still clear.
And only then... only then, did the doors finally slam in Faith's face, smacking her backward with another cry... as Su-Lin fell back as well... and Lee... stood there... letting loose such a sigh of relief.
“Welcome back, Vera.” He spoke, his voice no more than a whisper.
The doctors and orderlies looked stunned as they saw Vera awake. René, blind to all of this, merely stammered. “M-mommy?” His eyes watering as he buried his face in her chest and started sobbing.
Vera instinctively held her son, even though its such a terrible strain to lift her own arms. “Oh my boy....” she starts crying too, seeing how old he is. “....How long...?”
Lee bowed lightly, stepping backward... to tend to Su-Lin for the moment, looking to Vera and René... before suddenly turning that authoritative look upon the staff and orderlies. “Perhaps if you would all stop gawking like Magikarp out of water, you would notice there is a girl in pain on the floor, will you please attend to her?”
The same chansy nurse from earlier moved first, going to Faith. “Sweetie, are you okay?”
The bandage on the girl's head had came unraveled, trailing, alongside a drip of blood from her nose where she'd been hit by the door... and cradling her arm, lying there, shaking her head... trying not to cry out. “My wrist... hurts pretty bad...”
“Oh dear...come along, let's get you to the emergency ward...I'll just get you a wheelchair first” She said as she nodded to another nurse to fetch a wheelchair; helping Faith up into a leaning position. The girl nodded, vaguely... blinking open a watery eye... smiling, just ever so slightly despite her pain... looking to Vera and René.
Vera still held her son, but couldn't help noticing Faith and her parents. “Wh-who are you?”
The Ninetales simply held that wry smirk, as he helped Su-Lin to her feet. “For the moment, that is irrelevant, know only we are friends, and family. “
“I don't suppose you'll see our gloves are familiar...?” She chuckled lightly, holding her wrist up, displaying the gemstone glittering in her glove. Vera looked up at Su-Lin.
“You have the same gloves as my mother...” She shook her head. “Please tell me...how long have I been gone?”
“Too long.” The Ninetales spoke, simply nodding “We will answer all questions in due time, but just now... I feel you should have a little time with René.”
René continued to hug his mother, never willing to let her go again. “Yes....I see.” She struggled to sit up, so she can hold René. Taking that as their cue, the Sumisus left, following the chansy nurse as she helped Faith outside to a waiting wheelchair. The rest of the doctors and nurses followed suit.
INSERT
“I guess... that's everything?” Faith sighed, sitting in a wheelchair still, her head re-bandaged and wounds tended to, as a brand new cast now covered her left wrist, looking on, as Su-Lin and Lee remained in the background.
Then René wheeled Vera out in a wheelchair of her own. “Not quite, Faith is it?” Vera asked, her voice still weak, but stronger than it ought to be; thanks to the Aura treatment.
Faith responded with a blink, and a smile, as she nodded. “Yes... Faith Sumisu... shrine priestess of the Sumisu Temple!” She reintroduced herself again.
Smiling kindly, Vera nodded. Exhausted but too polite to show it. “And my niece, as I understand it.” Faith just smiled, nodding in reply. “...AND the reason I'm awake I hear. It was you who brought your parents here, wasn't it? And the one who realized the connection between my gloves and your shrine?” She went on.
“Well..” Faith gave her usual nervous laugh “...in a way, I guess?”
“Then I have you to thank for...all of this.” She rested her hand on Faith's head. “I'm so sorry you injured your wrist. I hope you would grant me the honor of being the first to sign it, as a sign of my gratitude towards you.“
Faith blushed, only smiling, as always, the paw on her head was her most appreciated gratitude. “It was a small cost to help bring you back... we're all glad to see you awake again.”
Vera nodded to her parents. “You have a very special child....you should be very proud of her”
For once... there was a small laugh that came from Lee, shaking his head. “Indeed... Faith is always full of surprises.” And from Su-Lin... just a smile... that was all she needed, tired herself... as she gently hugged against Lee.
René hugged his mom fiercely. “I missed you so much....” Vera gently ran her fingers through her son's hair.
“I missed you too...I'm so proud of you.”
Faith suddenly blinked... as she looked to René... and then Vera. “When you were... well... while you were gone... did you realize anything that happened around you?”
Biting her lip, Vera nodded. “I...I was aware of everything. It was...torturous for me. To hear my son pouring out his heart to me when he visited and to be unable of doing a thing--” She hugged René.
“I know... that you've been through a lot... and probably need a while yet to recover... but if I can... can I please ask you one favor?”
Vera looked at her and nodded. “Of course Faith...anything”
“Your hu- Robert... is trying to take René away, to Johto... and I know... René wants to stay here... with his friends... and his girlfriend Nicole... do you think you would be able to help us keep him here, at the PCA?”
Her eyes widen as anger flashes through her eyes like a fire that hasn't dimmed, despite nearly a decade. “René goes nowhere.”
The girl let loose such a sigh of relief, and then a smile, as she sat there, and nodded. “Thank you, Aunt Vera.”
“Aunt Vera...” She smiled. “I could get used to that.”
Faith smiled, grinning lightly.
Patting her son on the cheek, Vera murmured. “Come on...let's go home.”
And there, Lee stepped forward. “Please remember... our home is your home also, if you require a place to stay while you regain your strength: we would be more than happy to accommodate you.”
“Thank you...I hope you will be staying for a while more, though.” Vera said.
Su-Lin joined him, as the pair bowed, and held there for her, before standing once more. “ A few weeks more... I would imagine it could be enjoyable to take a small leave of absence here, if only to lend a helping paw.”
“I'll always be here!” Faith grinned. “Although... don't count on my paw right now...” She half laughed, wiggling the slightly numb fingers on that casted wrist.
“Thank you so much....it's good to know that I and René have a family we can count on and trust. Thank you.” Vera bowed. After a second, René bowed too. And from all the Sumisu's Faith included, they returned the bow too. And as the pair left, Su-Lin blinked. “...Do you think we should have explained why her son was in a skirt?”
THE END

“I guess... that's everything?” Faith sighed, sitting in a wheelchair still, her head re-bandaged and wounds tended to, as a brand new cast now covered her left wrist, looking on, as Su-Lin and Lee remained in the background.
THE END
Magnificent!
As much as René Vera would like to just 'go home', I'm sure the hospital staff will do their best to get Vera to stay for at least the night before releasing her. They're not going to let someone who miraculously came out of a 10 year comma just walk out the door without even a check-up, afterall. :\
