well in my opinion -- and that's just my opinion -- i don't think it should really matter to a seller. business is business, a lot of things get more money than they "deserve" (others words, not mine) because of the outreach they get rather than their quality. i don't think it's bad, but that sort of thing usually isn't decided by the producer. from personal experience, stuff will be just as popular as it was prior no matter how you price it -- people will just get the cheap ones and try and find a way to profit off of them instead (sorry this got longer than planned)
I used to sell designs for a little as $5 many many years ago, but over time I adjusted prices according to my general audience/customers and sales, with consideration of what is most efficient as well as your standard minimum wage. Although art isn't my forte, designing is also not at all easy for me. My prices are generally determined by me and my customers, and if people buy them, I usually keep it around the same price range unless it doesn't sell. It's only reasonable for someone to want to sell for a price that will personally benefit them especially if it's their main source of income, and if customers want to spend a lot of money for something they personally value, that is generally not something that anyone can control, yeah? There are only a handful of instances where I list designs with a set price, but with auctions, my starting bids are relatively low with a higher autobuy, and almost always, do these auctions end with the autobuy. Before, I never did any auctions, but then I've had many people ask me to list them as auctions so that other people will have the chance to win a design if they are willing to pay more than usual, seeing as how my designs tend to sell relatively quick. This is mainly a customer's choice and me adjusting to my general audience's needs, because if it benefits both me and them then why not? But I can understand if it seems a bit baffling. I unfortunately can't speak for others, as to why they choose to spend money the way they do for specific designs by specific artists, but everyone generally has their own personal preferences and values depending on a number of different factors. So if someone is selling a design for high, there is probably (but not always) a very good reason as to how it became that way, and the changes are usually determined by both designer and customer. It's not always gonna be everyone's cup of tea but it will definitely be the cup of tea for others if that makes sense ):
Ahh, this helps even more. I can see now that it varies depending on.. basically everything, lmao. I wasn't that baffled because after all your art is gorgeous, and the design is adorable. I've seen characters sell for hundreds before... commissioners are gods gift sometimes.
Pardon the fact that you had to write out a large paragraph because of me, oh gosh. But I'm sure a few other people can look at this for reference, as well. I haven't discussed this topic very much with another friend of mine who does commissions herself, but thanks again for making things clear!
