yeah a grey jedi are the ones who the rest of the order frown on but they get things done and are the ones that most regular people know because they are not afraid of getting there hands dirty. A grey jedi might have a few powers forbidden to Jedi because they feed of the dark side. He would have them because he would know that while viewed as evil they can be used for good.
