The Butcher Cometh: Act 3
Black Jack wearily opened his eyes. His head was pounding. After looking around, he noticed he was still sprawled out on the floor. He tried to force himself up but he was having trouble. His whole body was trembling; Clevenger thumped him with one hell of a punch. It took him a few minutes but he was finally on his feet. He looked around again but this time he had a better view. Through a window he could see the sun and judging by how bright it was outside, it was probably midday. Tables were overturned, tankards and broken plates were scattered across the floor, and it looked like no one else was around. The last item was later proven false. Jack heard moaning from under a table. He wobbled over to said table and moved it to the side. He found Travus; he was bruised and battered but otherwise alright. “Travus? Travus! Wake up, Travus!” Jack barked as he slapped Travus’ face.
His eyes slowly opened “uhhhhnn…What happened?” Jack answered his question. “We got our faces pounded in and they kidnapped Trixie.” “What, who kidnapped the captain?” Travus asked as Jack helped him to his feet. “Bartholomew D. Clevenger, the Butcher of Victoria Bay.” retorted Jack. “Who?” Travus queried. “Uh…I’ll explain later.” answered Jack. “Anyway, I’m going to rescue Trixie from Clevenger. In the meantime, you’re going to go and find the rest of the crew.” “What?” Travus asked. “I can’t find everyone; the city’s too big.” “Then find whoever you can.” replied Jack. “Meet me at Roaric’s Cliff by sunset. If Clevenger is as dangerous as I think he is, I’m gonna need the help.” With what strength and courage he could muster, Jack rushed himself out of the Black Buccaneer tavern. After Jack left, Travus moved into the doorway and muttered “Good luck, Jack.” He then ran off to begin his search.
“Come now Trixie; don’t scowl at me like that.” stated Clevenger as Trixie glared at him vindictively. She was obviously displeased about her situation. Her wrists were tied with rope behind her. Her ankles were tied together as well. She sat on her heels, close to a rather large rock. “That look doesn’t fit someone as lovely as you.” Trixie continued to glower at him. “Well I’m sorry, but I don’t usually enjoy being KIDNAPPED!” “That may be so” said Clevenger “but you don’t have to yell about it.” He smiled as he sat on a small boulder and sharpened his sword. The blade he held was massive to say the least; it was almost as large as he was tall. Clevenger’s sword was sharpened on one side, and the blade had no tip. It resembled a giant butcher’s cleaver. “How do you know my name anyway?” asked Trixie. Clevenger continued to sharpen his sword; he didn’t look at her when he replied “I did my research.” There was a pause as Trixie quizzically stared at him while he worked. She was disturbed by how meticulously he sharpened his blade; it was as if that was his sole purpose in life. Trixie began her interrogation again. “Who are you?” asked Trixie “And why did you kidnap me?” He answered, “My real name is Bartholomew Clevenger, but many people like to refer to me as ‘the Butcher of Victoria Bay’ or just ‘the Butcher’. As to why I kidnapped you, I want to battle your husband and your well-being gives him a reason to fight me.” Trixie stared exasperatedly at him and then sighed loudly. “Oh joy.” she declared sarcastically. “First I find out my childhood friend was murdered and now I get abducted by an infamous, muscle-bound lunatic. How could this possibly get any worse?” Trixie heard a seagull’s squawk in the distance as white goo plopped onto her shoulder. She fumed.
“I can’t believe this is happening.” she affirmed “I have to find Edison’s killer and you’re just wasting my time. He could be anywhere by now because of you and your stupid duel.” Clevenger looked up from his labor. “You complain too much” he stated “even when the killer you’re looking for is a lot closer than you think.” Trixie was surprised by his proclamation. He knew the assassin she hunted so fervently. “You, you know the killer? You know who murdered Edison?!” Clevenger stared at her, grinning deviously. “TELL ME!” she shrieked “TELL ME WHO KILLED EDISON!” After putting down his sword, Clevenger rose from his stone and leisurely walked over to Trixie. He kneeled in front of her and moved his face as close to hers as possible. He stared deeply and cruelly into her eyes and whispered “I did.” Her eyes widened. “Why?” she retorted as her voice cracked and her vision blurred with tears. “Because I could.” he responded. Trixie was mortified by his answer and then enraged by it. “You…” Trixie stated “You SON OF A!” With unparalleled hatred, Trixie lunged at him (or at least tried to). She landed on her side and heatedly attempted to break her bonds. She wanted to kill him with every fiber of her being but she couldn’t do so. Clevenger chuckled as Trixie tried angrily and then desperately to break free. After three minutes of trying, she stopped and just laid there on the earth. Clevenger rose back to his feet, beaming wickedly as he picked her up and propped her against a large boulder. Tears slowly streamed down her face. The man she passionately sought revenge against stood right before her but there was nothing she could do. Try as she might, she just wasn’t strong enough to avenge her friend.
Black Jack followed Clevenger’s directions exactly; making sure he would be at his destination by sunset. He traveled to the western border of Augusta and then went ten miles beyond it. Within those ten miles, he wandered through the Craggy Forest. It was in the forest that both Travus and Tito noticed him in the distance. “Hey Jack!” Tito ejaculated “We’re over here!” Jack saw them, ran to them, and when he got closer, he noticed only the two of them. He looked at Travus. “Was he the only one you could find?” he said with disappointment. “No” replied Travus “I also found Tyler but he ran off to get something. He didn’t say what though.” Jack sighed. “Well” stated Jack “I guess you two are better than nothing.” He continued walking toward Roaric’s Cliff. Tito and Travus followed him. As they walked, Jack told the two crewmen his plan. “Alright, here’s what I want you guys to do. Once I start fighting Clevenger, you two will sneak over and grab Trixie. You’ll then run away as fast and as far as you can. Are there any questions?” There was a brief pause. “That’s it?” queried Tito “Don’t you want us to help fight this Clevenger guy?” Jack turned and looked at him sternly. “No” Jack replied “You and Travus don’t have that much combat experience. You’ll only get in the way.” Jack turned back and continued heading towards his destination. “Besides” explained Jack “He wants me to fight him alone. If he sees you guys with me, he’ll probably kill Trixie. That’s why you’ll wait until I engage him. He’ll be distracted then.” Tito and Travus looked at each other briefly, looked at Jack, and then said in unison “Right.”
When the group reached the edge of the forest, Tito and Travus hid behind some trees. Jack needed to seem like he was alone. He moved out of the forest and walked a few feet more. He saw Clevenger waiting for him beside a boulder; his massive cleaver was held in his right hand and draped over his shoulders. Trixie was a few feet behind the Butcher. She sat on the ground, leaning against another boulder. Jack saw the rope bindings on her wrists and ankles, but that didn’t concern him. What worried him was the fact that Trixie was sitting quietly. She stared at the earth with despairing eyes; tears streaming down her face. “What did you do to her?!” Jack demanded. Clevenger gave his reply. “That isn’t important now.” Clevenger then lifted his sword and pointed it at Jack. He smiled and said “It’s time we began our duel.”
