I'm not sure what to call this species, or if it should even have a name. It represents an aspect of myself that I've pieced together from dreams and daydreams.
These are the summer and winter versions of the same creature.
During the warmer months (once spring comes around), I feel more like a sleek, dark-colored creature with webbed feet that thrives in the depths of freshwater caves. It's happiest in the cool water; it feels free and alive and one with nature. It can venture on land, but usually doesn't stray very far from its home. Though it prefers freshwater, it can survive in salty or brackish water as well. It also likes swampy areas.
Once the cooler weather comes around, the creature's longer, fluffier, white coat of fur develops. It becomes more reclusive, and in preparation for the frigid weather it swims through a secret underwater channel, into a small cave-like ice chamber that includes a luminescent, deep, and very warm pool of water. A spring with healing, relaxing properties that the creature returns to whenever it feels stressed, wants to be alone or simply sleep. The cave is often blocked off with a boulder for protection. This is where it spends most of its time, though it will periodically venture outside its secret cave and into the snow, both to hunt and appreciate the beautiful snowy scenery. Once the snow begins to melt and the climate gets warmer, the creature sheds its fluffy white fur into its darker, otter-like pelt and travels back through the hidden underwater channel back into more open waters.
Its behavior is a mixture of canine, feline, reptile, dragon and aquatic animal. It's omnivorous, but prefers scavenging for meat on land and catching fish in the water. It has both a set of lungs and hardly visible gills, alternating between them during required circumstances.
Sorry, but this is not an open species since it's very personal and special to me. It's also the only one of its kind, like some sort of cryptid.
