I know many of you dislike the Holy Roman Church. She kind of deserves it, but hopefully the current pope Francis can show that it is not only about burning witches and child molesting.
This rosary is unique, done after my own drafts by a professional craftswoman. The heart respectively center piece shows Jeanne of Arc, patron of the French Monarchy and symbol of militant faith. The pater noster - pearls bear the major pilgrimage churchs of Rome with the individual saints. More medailons will be added, I need to see how the result will look like.
This rosary should give homage to the Spanish Habsburgs and the dark baroque style the Spanish Golden Age represented. If you have seen "Elizabeth", you will understand what I mean.

I had a history and classical guitar teacher in my 8th grade Catholic Middle School that wore Muslim prayer beads around his wrist. When we asked him why he wore them if he wasn't Muslim, he responded that he just re-purposed the beads and prayers for "Hail Marys" and "Our Fathers". He also gave us a little knowledge about the original intent for the beads. There were 33 beads strung together and one would cycle through them 3 times (3 x 33) to recite the 99 names of Allah. Stuff like this stays with me forever.
Greek Orthodox cultures also use what are called prayer ropes, or komboskini (κομποσκοίνι); often these would have 100, 50, or 33 knots on them. The use of the misbaha (مسبحة) or tasbih (تسبيح) is no different, though of course as you said based on the 99 names of Allah.
I'd say that prayer beads originated in the Orient, with the japa mala (जप माला) used in Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Since then, they've spread throughout the globe and used in various faiths, but I will tell you this... what they have in common is that it seems to be something used to obtain a meditative state with the repeated prayer.
Fun fact: OED claims that the word "bead" is derived from the Old English "gebed" or prayer.
