"Pfeffernüsse" is an old german xmas bakery, especially small rounded cookies. "pfeffer" (pepper in english) was a synonyme for all spices what weren't salt or sugary (like honey) during medieval times, and the name stuck to these days. though of course there is no pepper in them at all.
