This took me way longer to finish than it should have.
So, although the movie shows her vain, selfish, and villainous side, I wanted to capture those nurturing and motherly moments that Mother Gothel must have had with young Repunzel. These things are hinted at in the first song Repunzel sings where she talked about knowing how to read books and sew. Etc.
It's also obvious that Repunzel does love her step-mother, so she can't have been treated too horribly. And Mother Gothel also kidnapped her when she was a baby, meaning she had to care for and nurture her.

True, which is going back to her selfish and vain nature. But the argument I'd use to contest that is that Repunzel has a very good-natured attitude, and is cleary not a child neglected or abused. Perhaps the attention is directed more at Repunzel's hair than anything, but she has certainly not been lacking of a motherly type of affection.
I wouldn't say that she's unaware of it's properties. She definitely uses it to heal Flynn later on, and is aware there is magical essence in it. Mother Gothel directly tells her it's very special and magical, she just neglects to say that it was her who attempted to cut Repunzel's hair.
I enjoyed drawing this just to show that everyone has light and darkness inside of them. But it's what they choose to act on that defines them.
