Actually it was closed twice given that they first closed it in the early 90s (possibly due to the fact it was paired with a Micheal Jackson mini movie at the time), then brought back towards the middle of the decade after a bit of a fan protest and with a slight overhaul done to the attraction that actually let you see LESS of Figment and was paired with more hands on interaction stations, paired with the Honey I Shrunk the Kids 3d movie ride. Apparently it wasn't enough as you say and they permenently closed it in 1998. Although I think they still sell Figment merchandise my Figment plush was gotten circa the early 2000s.
