Lots and lots of drawing! I didn't suddenly get good at it after all. When I first started going with a smooth line style it looked absolutely horrible, the line widths everywhere and everything sketchy and wobbly. But I kept at it and still am.
I do find SAI helps, I don't like working in photoshop or similar.
