Introducing the Destroyer, the workhorse of the fleet.
Destroyers are thinner and longer than Frigates, but also boast a more extensive and powerful arsenal. The primary purpose of a Destroyer is to serve as a space combat superiority vessel, but they also function as a mobile weapons platform.
One hundred and ninety point defense turrets protect the Destroyer from fighters, and its twenty rail guns are able to tear larger ships apart. Twelve missile pods and four heavy multi-missile launchers unleash salvos of tracking torpedoes at enemy forces. Concealed nuclear missile pods add crippling EMP and radiation weaponry to the mix. And if that isn't enough, Destroyers have two three-barreled heavy plasma cannons built into either side of the bow, which are devastating against unshielded vessels.
A stacked group of sixteen engines propels the Destroyer through space, powered by three thermonuclear reactors. A sophisticated sensor relay mounted near the engines provides advanced navigation and situational awareness to the crew, and helps the guns tag multiple targets. Because the Destroyer is designed solely for combat, its bridge deck is placed into a heavily armored section of the bow, limiting the enemy's ability to effectively damage it. The armor on these ships is extensive, supported by primary and secondary deflectors shields. Adding to this defensive capacity are two large hangars, capable of launching multiple snub fighters, bombers, and drop-ships as is necessary.
More common than the Heavy Frigate, but far more expensive than the Light Frigate, Destroyers completely outclass both vessels in terms of defense and firepower. Destroyers are brought into play when a combination of heavy firepower, good defensive measures, and speed are needed. A single Destroyer with a full payload carries enough destructive power to render a good portion of a world uninhabitable, and lay waste to anyone who underestimates its power.
The Destroyer and Dark Space universe are mine.
