I have more in my mind but It takes me a while to get motivation to actually write, though finally I have begun to delve deeper into the stories involved with my characters. What I envisioned for these two was an action story with some emotional conflict and romance on the side. Anyways enjoy!
Fading rays of light lay over a grassy plain. It was sunset, the time for the winding down of emotion and conflict. It was here that two heroes followed a twisting path leading them through a seemingly endless journey. Tula followed Kel slowly through the plains, their next adventure would undoubtedly await them beyond the next town. Two of her arms strayed behind her and carried their bag of traveling supplies. Meanwhile two of her other hands clutched a small ball of web and she mindlessly toyed with it on her fingers to keep her thoughts away from lingering emotion. As they walked a sudden glance at Kel caused a rush of pink blood to her face, and she was grateful that he was walking in front so that he could not see her. Even if she felt happy to be traveling with him there was always the guilt that he was still afraid of her, or worse. If he discovered her feelings then that would surely only cause more problems for them. Their goal was to save others from harm, and usually her feelings got in the way of that goal. She was always guilty of just being herself.
"It's getting late now, we probably won't even make it to town by the time the moon is up." Kel said, breaking the silence.
"Yes, well we do have enough supplies to set up a camp until morning. A good idea to stop and regain energy, hmm?" Tula allowed her fangs to show in a smile for a moment.
"It wouldn't hurt. Here, hand me the bag." Tula discarded the loose web in her hands, she could always make more after all. Kel turned around and paused as Tula fumbled with the bag and handed it to him.
“We’ll start traveling again tomorrow.”
By nightfall the two where off the path near a small fire. Having six arms made Tula a skilled multitasker, and she worked away at cooking a meal that she had saved in their bag. The smoke weaved its way through her skin and made her feel safe. Being a good cook as a traveler was very useful indeed, and she took comfort in this fact. As she cooked Kel slipped back into the tent they had put up. This was a typical night for them. Kel would often seek isolation and Tula always knew why. She was used to reading other's emotions, and she took pride in the ability, but with Kel sometimes she tried to repress it in hopes that she wouldn't ever feel his pain. Perhaps this was selfish, but she could only hope for the best.
Her senses perked up as she could feel Kel's stronger emotions sinking in and she silently cursed her ability once again. Surely it wasn't easy to lose someone so close to you. Even after all they had been through Kel still blamed himself for his sister's death. He had never bothered to tell Tula everything that had happened. He wouldn't even tell her what he was feeling, but it did not matter, she could feel what he was feeling, and it was agony.
Her mind weighed her down so much that she almost didn't even realize the meat was now finished cooking. She thought about conjuring some of her silk to wrap the food up with. She should, as it is a natural preservative. She decided against it, she felt it would only remind Kel that she herself was like something of a monster, one that he had previously terrified of. The cooked meat was quickly placed on long leafy fronds instead and she sprinkled various spices over it. A perfect meal, the work of a skilled chef.
As Tula entered the tent with the food Kel straightened up against the wall and struggled to put away a familiar jacket that had many memories attached to it.
“I was just thinking about our next adventure.” Kel huffed.
“Liar.” she thought.
Kel stumbled again as he finally finished folding the jacket. Had he felt her suspicions? Of all people he was the hardest to read sometimes.
Tula sat down in front of him and the food was placed on the ground beside them. She slowly reached for the bag beside Kel and from it procured a knife. Once again she could feel the heat on his face. Should it always be so awkward between them? She felt a strong emotion rise in him as her arm brushed his leg. She focused her energy to identify it. Fear? Was he still fearful that she would try to hurt him? No, even if he had not yet gotten over his inadvertent racism of spider folk she was sure he wouldn’t still be afraid of her. Then perhaps it wasn’t fear but just the sheer uncomfortable feeling of being alone with someone you were taught to hate. She held the knife firmly and began cutting the meat slowly until all of it was in chunks. Then she prepared to hand him a leaf full of it. As she looked into his eyes she saw a small orange blush on his face. Her mind was still in a haze and a thought was formed in her mind but she dismissed it before she could even fully process it.
“It looks delicious.” he accepted it.
Tula looked down and shivered restlessly.
“I’m going to go do a quick patrol before I eat, I…. think I sense something out there. You stay here and relax, I’ll tell you if I see anything.” Tula gathered her strength and stood up. Kel nodded and started to eat, he knew she was strong enough on her own.
Tula retreated from the tent and walked off from it for a bit, gazing up at the night sky as she did so. Sure, she had lied, she had to get away for a moment. If they had been in any real danger Tula would have sensed it a mile away. She didn’t wander too far, the whole time she stayed within sight of the campsite. The stars were bright that night as always. She started to feel calm again as she let the breeze carry her worries in the wind.
When she returned the fire was still burning brightly and she quickly spotted the rest of the meat. It must have been put by the fire to keep it warm. She walked over to it and noticed a silver lining across it. Some of her leftover herbal silk had been placed over the food to preserve it for her, and for a moment she allowed herself a small smile.
Maybe she wasn’t such a burden after all.
