When soldiers speak, it's wise to listen. They're
alive to talk; that right there had better signify.
So I got to talking with this beautiful wolfess
Captain, who had quite an experience in the war
against the Kiellan Hordes.
Didn't actually say much about that, but yeah, she
said wise things. Wrote it all down. Glad we met.
We'll be seeing more of her.

=============================================================================
Introduction, Part One:
Picture a wolfess.
She is tall, with short curly dark hair, her grey fur shot through with faint
dark markings. A faint sign that her father was a tiger.
But beautiful, oh yes she is very beautiful. Blue eyes to die for. Gorgeous
tail. Her body is strong and lean, a very well-built female wolf here. In a very
specific sense of the term, it must be said.
She is wearing some armour on legs and arms and shoulders. Those are
good boots on her footpaws, that help protect her calves. And heavy armoured
gloves on her paws. Her helmet was designed for both protection and ferocity; it
succeeds.
In short, this is a warrior. The deadly longsword she grasps in one paw tells
us that for certain. How easily she holds it tells us that she can wield it like a
lightning bolt. No question.
Oh, and one more thing: She is also wearing a chain mail bikini. You know
the type, the Red Sonya sort of thing. Although if Sonya ever came up against
this one she'd be sliced lunch meat faster than you can butter the bread.
Not that chain mail bikinis are that good as armour but they do cover at
least a few things that ought to be covered on the battlefield. Does sort of draw
attention to what's underneath, though, which can be as distracting as nude any
day. So it works for Captain Vanestha Lio.
Now imagine fifty-six more fur women exactly like her standing in formation
behind her.
Oh, not all wolves; we've got a number of species here. Several sleek foxes,
quite few canid types, more than a few downright lethal-looking felines, and so
on. A chunky bear or two. The bunny furs are out of a predator's nightmare, big
and brawny and look able to extract fangs with a pinky finger. But muscle and
sexy can and do go well together, and it shows. Plus big ears (and helmets made
for that).
In fact, they're all considerably desirable killers, which could be considered
an oxymoron of sorts. Whistle at them as they march past and test that theory;
go on, I dare you.
This is Captain Lio and 3 Platoon, Scout Company, Lion Brigade, of the army
of King Reiokar. Whistle at them, and a beautiful wolf Captain will come up to you
and say sweetly, 'Did you drop these?' as she hands you your lips.
(Lio's never really done it, but a few males might have wished she'd settled
for that instead.)
Beyond the shadow of a doubt these are elite troops, the best of the best
(as a good scout platoon requires). They are all ferociously skilled fighters and
are nothing if not battle hardened. The whole platoon would follow Captain Lio
into Hell, murder Satan's Guards, loot the fridge for beer, throw a few of the
cuter demons and incubbi (and succubi) over their shoulders, and march out the
other side. That was fun, Captain. What do we do next?
Personally, I wouldn't put it past them.
What's not fun, however, is the fact that the Keillan Hordes, after several
centuries of quiet, are on the move again. The Herogian Confederation may not
be as strong on this occasion, but when it's fight or die time every kingdom either
commits everything to the war or pays the bill.
The Keillan Hordes are not noted for their gentle accounting methods.
The details of the entire war are too vast (there are a *lot* of hordes). We
cannot discuss it here. It is only possible to look at Captain Lio and 3 Platoon, and
what happens to them, and how the war touches them. Their story alone will fill
volumes.
In all honesty, it is not exactly the story of the war either. Rather, their
story began on a day that could have destroyed them. It did destroy the Kiellan
mage who sprang the trap. It will never be known whether there was mercy or
incompetence involved; piles of smoking ash do not give intelligible reports.
Battle magic can be a little on the tricky side. Duh.
But as Captain Lio gave the order to launch the surprise attack on what
seemed like a Keillan encampment, the enemy instantly fell back (as planned),
what looked like a tornado swept in from a clear blue sky, and threw 3 Platoon...
...Threw them…
...Threw them…
Where?
Not into the void to their deaths, which had to have been the enemy mage's
intention.
Not underground and buried; just as fatal.
No, where Lio and Co. landed was a wide grassy field under a clear blue sky
that was nowhere they recognized (a scout platoon would know these things).
But then who knows where a misaimed mass-teleportspell will end up?
The platoon's fox fur mage, Lt. Hammuria, was as much in the dark as
everybody else (much to her frustration).
So exactly how is Captain Lio going to get everybody home?
Assuming they can find the faintest foggiest of clues as to where home is…?
Introduction, Part Two:
So I was discussing webcomic ideas with a friend, and what tends to attract
audiences.
At one point I said something like, 'Hey, how about a webcomic where
everybody's in chain mail bikinis? That's *got* to draw viewers.'
Ha funny, and it probably would. About ten milliseconds later, Captain Lio
and 3 Company arrived in my mind with a loud <Crash!>
Lookitthat: they're all wearing chain mail bikinis.
And sonofabitch, are they ever dangerous.
And double-sonofabitch, think of the story possibilities here. The
sword-and-sorcery genre is rich with generic plotlines. I might even want to write
a few of my own just for variety.
Unfortunately, doing it as a webcomic would nearly murder some poor artist.
The quality required would be high. A good part of the attraction would be highly
sexy fur females in CMBs. Slaughtering things. How are we at blood spatter?
Doing it as a novel seemed more practical. Still a huge amount of work.
Some has been done. More is being added as time goes by. The project might
catch fire somewhere in spring 2012.
But one thing that was done was some deep thinking about Captain Lio,
insofar as the whole saga [of how they get home] rests on her shoulders. Who
she is and how she handles the demands of command makes or breaks the thing.
Title for the project: Just Troops.
Then she started speaking to me.
This is what she said.
She had a lot to say.

Hokay, I think that can go in the compliments folder; just got a feeling about it,
y'know? :- ) TY.
The story I've got in mind: Complex, ambitious, and biiiig, and essentially a fur
ripoff of the Odyssey, ground combat version. Degree of difficulty: Way high.
But thinking about the arc of thing did generate a lot of very visual 'flashes' of
Lio & Co. in a variety of action (some of it horizontal). Thus giving me an unusually
clear picture of who she is.
Not half so much aphorisms here as dialog Lio will be delivering. I'll take it. Now
to work out the rest of the characters in the platoon. Then invent a whole busload
of antagonists they have to fight through. Big story? Whoo-hoo, understatement.
Much moah thinking needed. But damn, will this one be worth it. Gonna be a
bitchuva lot of good stuff for an artist(s) to sink fangs into too; bonus.
Gotta love it when a plan comes together leading to a ton of dead enemies,
as Lio would surely say. :- )
fwbrown61 Shall take a quick look, but gotta emphasize the word quick. Will take a
few days; time is hellish pressed. In the middle of construction project that's
coming down to the wire.
Been at it all summer; still a crapload of hammering and skilsaw work
left. When do I find time for writing? Ah yes, good question there. :- /
