Gawd I remember something like this happening in DnD. Group found this wooden block... but it was a puzzle block. MY char managed to get it open after a LOT of tries... but another char's damned pet CLOSED it by pouncing it and resetting the lock.
Then the DM had it stolen and FORCED my char to forget it. [said DM Was my sister who was prejudiced against me.]
