i remember those early manga days. my friend collected all the Caravan kidd issues and i collected all of the ghost in the shell ones and then we share them. good times

I still never understood why Major Motoko wore a skimpy one-piece in Ghost in the Shell. I guess it was fan service to get people interested in the story.

A nice theory, but fan service is something Masamune Shirow has no need for. He is a good enough storyteller to show off skimpy wearing women and having a logical explanation within the story.

Just look at the older Appleseed. Showing off the female main character? She goes to a sauna and take a massage together with a friend. Dresses up as a sexy cop for her boyfriend. And so on.

My theory is that the Major is simply not concerned about appearances. Competence is the only thing that counts for her on the job.

I have no idea. But fan service it wasn't.
If you want to call something fan-service, it should be the pages cut from the US version of the comic where she is in a simulation haveing a threeway with two of her two (female) friends.
