“So… we're just sitting here waiting for her to show up?"
"Yes Sammi, though she isn't due to be here for at least a few more minutes."
"Fine…"
Pre-K had managed to commandeer a small student lounge that had luckily been empty when they arrived. They were currently just sitting around waiting for their new team member. Sammi was antsy as she sat in a chair, her tail swishing nervously. The rest of the team had silently agreed she was least comfortable with a new team member joining… it'd taken her long enough to warm up to all of them and now a stranger was joining the group. Most of the rest of the team were relatively calm, barring Andrew who was nervous like always. Jane was using the chance to do some of her homework, Jules was playing with his long hair and putting it in different styles as he sat kicking his legs, and Petie was fiddling with his custom made genosect themed Poke-Gear… Nav… whatever it was. Meanwhile their coach Maddie was shuffling through the various forms she had on hand to complete the new member joining and make it official with the school… all they needed now was their new member showing up.
A sudden knock on the open door got everyones attention as they looked up… to see a chubby azurill with cyan hair and a big tail ball that looked like he could use it as a beanbag chair. He looked as nervous as Andrew always was as he stood there nervously for a moment before taking a few tentative steps into the room, his big tail bouncing behind him as he walked. He was a little taller then all the Pre-K members but his outfit,a long sleeved t shirt, knee length shorts, and velcro tape sneakers, along with his looks put him in the same "Big Kindergartner" category most of them had visually. The stranger shifted nervously, his sneakers squeaking a little, before clearing his throat and finally speaking up.
"H-hello Baros…" he said quietly, looking at Andrew as the pichu had a puzzled look on his face while his ears flicked back and forth a little. Suddenly the electric types face lit up with surprise "C-chuu! Y-You're in S-special Attack 1 class w-with me chuuu!" he exclaimed, finally recognizing the guy. The azurill look surprised by this and blushed a little, which showed up brilliantly on his shiny blue cheeks, before nodding "Y-yes… I'm P-Patrice… um…" he fidgeted nervously again before quietly asking "A-are you still open t-to auditions for your team?" Which made Andrew's ears droop as he shook his head and said "Chuuuu… s-sorry… w-we already f-found a new member t-to fill the s-spot… chuuu…"
Patrice's gaze dropped down to his feet "Oh…" he said, his vice now very quiet "S-sorry to bother you then… thank y-you for y-your time…" before turning on his heels and timidly walking out the door, the only sounds being the slightly squishy bouncing of his tail and the squeaking on his sneakers. The team was quiet for a moment as they watched him go before Jules spoke up "Um… couldn't we let him audition maybe…?" he asked innocently only for Jane to cut him off with the obvious "We already told Tabitha she got the slot." the munchlax said bluntly "We can't just take that back now." Which made Jules's ear and tail droop as he let out a sad "Oh…" as he was quiet for a moment… before Petie spoke up.
"You just wanted to hug his tail for a bit, didn't you?"
"No! … did look fun and bouncy though…"
*********************
"I knew I should have come earlier, why did I have to take so long to gather the courage?"
Patrice sighed to himself as he walked down the hall, tail bouncing behind him "They're just schoolmates, what am I afraid of? … back to being alone I guess…" he resisted the urge to hug his tail for comfort as his head and arms drooped sadly "Who am I kidding, best case I would've just been their teammate, not their friend or anything like that. After I asked around where they’d be today too…" he mumbled softly before resuming walking down the hall, the squeaking of his shoes and squishing on his bouncing tail to accompany him "Anyway they looked like they needed someone real strong to back them up, what use could I have been? The only thing I'm good at is running away, and only cause I'm easy to overlook…"
Just as he mumbled that to himself, and had to resist hugging the big blue ball on the end of his tail for comfort again, Patrice ended up walking right into somebody who'd just rounded the corned suddenly. Overlooked or not he needed to remember to look where he was going. "Hey!" he shouted in surprise while stumbling back a little and rubbing his nose. Patrice suddenly realized what'd happened and panicked, looking at the ground. After a few seconds of silence he nervously stole a glance up from the floor to see just who he'd run into. He blinked in surprise to find himself looking eye to eye with somebody, which was unusual due to how short Patrice was compared to most people.
It turned out to be a tyrogue… kid? It was hard to tell, but Patrice guessed the boy was like him and just looked like a kid and was really a teen, particularly since the azurill had just left a room full of similar teens. The tyrogue's outfit wasn't doing anything to help him look more grown up as he was sporting a button up short sleeved shirt, dark blue shorts, and a pair of suspenders. Combined with the fact his short black hair looked like somebody had tried to brush it down flat and neat (though parts of it were curling up cutely) he looked like he was on his way to kindergarten picture day. Either way he looked as nervous/embarrassed as Patrice was. The azurill cuddled and hid behind his tail as he stuttered out an apology… as the tyrogue apologized at the same time.
"S-sorry…"
"Sorry…"
There was a nervous silence as Patrice looked back down, too embarrassed to really say a anything. He was wondering how to properly get out of this situation when the tyrogue coughed a little and tried to speak up "Uh… I heard team Pre-K was somewhere around here… a-are they?" he asked, his voice squeaky and prepubescent sounding… a bit like Patrice's. The azurill just nodded, still too embarrassed to really say anything, as the fighting type adjusted the formal collar of his shirt nervously and was quiet for a moment before finally speaking up again. "Uh… t-this might sound silly… but d-do you know if they're still open for auditions?" he asked as Patrice suddenly realized the kid was like him.
"They're closed." Patrice said, opting to be direct and get this over quickly to minimize the pain… even though he kept hiding behind his tail ball as he said it. He felt worse as the fighting types face fell and his cheeks flushed pink. "Oh… s-sorry to bother you…" he said weakly looking down at his feet and turning away from Patrice as the azurill felt a bit guilty about that… but what could he have done? Either way he saw his opening to get away from this embarrassing meeting as he said one more stuttered "S-sorry…" before hurrying down the hall, still clutching his tail as his sneakers squeaked against the floor tiles.
****************
Caesar let out a deep sigh. The tyrogue KNEW he should have come the day they held the audition… why couldn't he make up his mind to do that? He'd just kept waffling back and forth on what he should do and he'd missed his chance. Sighing and shaking his head the fighting type wondered why he was giving himself grief with this anyway. What had he wanted to achieve even if he'd HAD gone to the auditions? They wanted a special attacker… sure he knew Rock Slide but that probably wasn't enough… no, he knew why he'd REALLY wanted to go to the Pre-K auditions.
He'd wanted to apologize to Petie… which was pretty stupid in itself. The teddy didn't even know him or know what Caesar had done to him in grade school. Even then if he wanted to apologize for it he could just keep going down the hall and ask to talk to him… as Caesar just stood there shifting on his feet in the middle of the hall and biting his lip. He couldn't do it! He couldn't bring himself to go and make a scene like that. What if Petie didn't want to talk to him? What if Petie got angry at him? What if he got laughed at? What if… if…
Sighing and clutching his head the tyrogue turned to toddle down the hall distractedly. He NEVER could make up his mind to do anything… at least nothing important. Not this and not evolution… he was just lucky his dad's weren't pressuring him to try and evolve anytime soon. Oh who was he kidding… his dad hadn't pressured him to potty train, say his first word, or even learn his ABCs. He suspected they'd be happy if he just stayed an innocent little toddler they could keep safe… though he could understand why and he didn't love them any less for it. He just wished…
"Eep!"
"Ack!"
He let out a surprised squawk as he bumped into somebody else, having not been watching where he'd been going. Stumbling back he could feel his cheeks go bright pink with embarrassment at this. Running into two people in less than twenty minute? He really had to start watching where he was going. Looking to see who he'd bumped into… angled his gaze down a little to find himself looking at a little gothita girl in a fancy outfit that looked like a china doll. He blinked in confusion for a moment till it dawned on him she was likely another short teen like he was. He blushed more as she looked up to meet his gaze and said in a prim and proper tone.
"I apologize for bumping into you like that, but you might wish to watch where you're going in the future."
"R-right… sorry… I-I'll try to… really sorry…"
“… it’s alright, I suppose I wasn’t paying as much attention to where I was going as I should have been myself… so I apologize as well.” the girl said, brushing her skirt down. Her tone and words sounded incredibly formal, like she was at a high-society meet & greet or something, and left Caesar shifting awkwardly where he stood without a clue how to respond. “Now, excuse me please.” She said simply as she stepped around Caesar and started to walk down the hall leaving the nervous tyrogue standing there trying to think of something to say. Suddenly realization dawned on Caesar as he put two and two together. She was tiny like he, Petie, the azurill, and (he assumed) most of Pre-K was and she was heading down to where the team was where the azurill had just come from after being told auditions were closed so that meant…
“U-uh! P-pardon me!” he called, voice squeaking as he stumbled after her for a moment. Luckily the girl heard him, stopped, and turned around meaning he didn’t have to chase after her. “T-team Pre-K c-closed auditions for t-their team.” He stammered, standing in front of her “I c-checked… I-I’m sorry…” he said, hanging his head a little in apology… as the girl let out a soft giggle. Blinking in confusion and surprise Caesar looked up to find her giving him a slightly amused smile “Thank you for telling me, but I already knew that.” She explained simply, continuing before Caesar could question what she was doing heading for them “You see, I’m their new team member. I was going to go meet them to finish joining. Thank you for the concern though.” She finished, giving him a small curtsy.
Caesar could feel his cheeks flush red in embarrassment as he realized he’d just made an idiot of himself. His legs shook a little as he bit his lip before his shame overcame him and he turned on his heels and fled. He didn’t know where he was going, just that it’d be someplace other than next to somebody who just saw him be that stupid. He bit his lip more as he heard the girl call out, something about what his name was or where he was going… but he couldn’t turn around and answer her, not after that… right now he just wanted to be alone to sulk till he felt better…
********************
Watching the tyrogue vanish around the corner Tabitha frowned sadly. Had she’d said something to offend him? Had she angered him maybe? Should she chase after him to try and apologize? She wasn’t sure what to do… she didn’t know enough about people or regular social interaction to figure stuff like this out yet due to having been locked up in the family mansion most of her life…
She shifted nervously on her feet as she realized there was also her meeting with Team Pre-K she needed to get to and she was almost late to that already. She bit her lip a little as she realized she needed to make a judgment call here… and after a moment of deliberation decided her meeting was the more pressing mater. She still planned to try and find the tyrogue later and apologize though… it just… just wouldn’t be polite or professional of her to keep Pre-K waiting, especially after they chose her to join their team.
Sighing she took a deep breath to regain her composure and resumed walking down the hall… though her resolve faltered for a moment when she saw the open door waiting for her. Gulping and taking another deep breath she brushed her dress down, more out of habit that anything, and walked into the room… and immediately tried not to crumple under the combined attention of the team. She didn’t know why she was so intimidated… there’d been more people looking at her when she’d walked into the auditions and she’d held her own then. Either way she fought to keep her knees from knocking as she cleared her throat.
“Thank you very much for allowing me to join your team, I said this before but I am Tabitha Moreau and it is a pleasure to meet you all. I also would like to apologize for me being late to this meeting and”
“Okay, first off the formality has to go. It’s annoying and in case you didn’t notice we’re kinda casual here.”
‘Er… sorry?” Tabitha squeaked a little at the comment the dratini girl had made, fidgeting nervously as she mentally fumbled for what to do in this situation. After a moment she managed to figure out something to say “U-Um… w-what do we n-need to do to make my membership with the team official?” she asked, squeaking and fumbling over the question while doing so. Luckily the nice miltank who’d helped her to the nurses office stepped forward “Oh, we just need you to sign some paperwork, then Andrew signs it, we turn it into the office, and it’s done.” She explained, smiling gently as Tabitha felt a little reassured that it’d be that simple.
“But…” the miltank continued “First why don’t we introduce ourselves to you. I’m Madeline Tunderana, Team Pre-K’s coach, but please call me Maddie.” She said, motioning to herself before moving behind Tabitha and ushering the reluctant girl into the room to stand in the middle of the gathering. Blushing as she was gently pushed forward Tabitha couldn’t help but feel rather… small in comparison to the girl. This Maddie just had a kind of presence that made Tabitha feel like she was a real little kid again instead of just looking like one. Before she could protest she found herself looking at her new team as Maddie motioned to them to introduce themselves.
The chubby pichu who’d had been leading the auditions, at least supposedly… to be honest Tabitha found it hard to picture him leading anything outside maybe a line at one of those daycares she’d heard about, spoke up first. “I-I’m A-Andrew, A-Andrew Baros chuuuu…” he squeaked before hopping down from the chair he was in, which was quite the hop due to the size difference, and offering her a handshake “I-I’m the l-leader of the team… and t-the main special a-attacker… chuuuu… I t-think…” he stuttered as Tabitha timidly shook his hand, not sure what to make of the fact he was apparently the team leader… beyond general confusion and disbelief anyway.
“And I’m his sister Jane. Dunno my role… heavy hitter probably…” The munchlax girl with her mouth half full of what looked to be a good portion of a bag of cookies said. This set off alarm bells of confusion in Tabitha’s head as she looked at the strongly build girl in the overalls. She didn’t know much about breeding groups but a munchlax and pichu being related didn’t seem right. “Nice to meet you.” She continued, fishing more cookies out of her bag, her tone as flat and deadpan as her first comment… which mixed with the empty, emotionless expression on her face to give Tabitha the heebie-jeebies. Trying to hide her slight shudder the gothita gave them her best smile “Nice to meet you as well.” She said politely before releasing Andrew’s chubby little paw and timidly glancing at the other members of the team…
And suddenly found herself being hugged by the little riolu girl… boy… er… she wasn’t sure what gender it was. All she knew was its tail was wagging happily as it hugged her “Hi! I’m Jules Elapsi! It’s great to meet you!” it chirped, it’s voice just a little too high to let her pinpoint the gender… the gender-neutral name didn’t help either. She wanted to assume girl but she’d seen how feminine her brothers looked at their most masculine and figured Jules might be like them. “I’m a boy by the way~” Jules added with a giggle, answering the question Tabitha had been mulling over “For some reason people can’t tell…” he said with an innocent look of confusion on his face “Anyway I’m the… um… hmmmm…” he paused for a moment and scratched his head before smiling “Guess I’m the melee fighter!” he finally declared proudly, sticking his little chest out.
“And this is my best friend Petie!” Jules suddenly added before Tabitha could try to get a word in edgewise as the riolu eagerly dragged her by the hand over to the teddiursa still sitting in the too big for him chair. The normal type timidly waved to her, looking as nervous as she felt, before climbing down from the chair. “Um… like Jules said I’m Petie, Petie Julafton. Nice to meet you?” he weakly offered, holding his paw out to her for a handshake. Tabitha actually knew a tiny bit about him since Toni had mentioned him the other day… but she decided it wasn’t the time to bring that up as she shook his paw “Nice to meet you, what’s your role on the team?” she asked politely… and was immediately distressed to see the teddiursa’s face fall as his eyes dropped and he weakly mumbled “… kinda don’t really have one anymore… I’m not really needed…”
Tabitha was considering panicking, figured she’d already ruined her relationship with her new teammates, before Maddie stepped in. “He’s our reserve member, like you.” She explained quickly as she kneeled down and turned her attention to the sad little bear, Tabitha took a few steps away as she vaguely listened to the miltank reassure Petie… she probably should have tried to say something but she’d already messed up once so perhaps leaving this to Maddie would be best. Turning around she looked to the last member of the team. The dratini girl who’d spoken up earlier and was still sitting in the chair, long tailed wrapped around her as she stared at the wall and appeared to be doing her best to pretend Tabitha didn’t exist.
“Um… pardon me?” Tabitha spoke up, taking a few tentative steps towards the girl… concerned she might have offended her somehow as well. Shifting the dragon finally looked at her, the small girl trying to look imposing as she sat there… and Tabitha biting back the urge to comment that it made her look like a child trying to sit in their parents chair. “Names Sammi, Sammi Endrake.” The dratini said, her tone dismissive and annoyed, before looking away and resuming her former position of trying to look everywhere but at Tabitha “I’m the mixed fighter.” she added, not bothering to look back in the psychics direction. Pouting her cheeks out and blushing Tabitha couldn’t help but feel a bit insulted…
Which was immediately deflated as she found Maddie at her side “Sorry, Sammi doesn’t warm up to people easily.” The miltank said, smiling down to Tabitha. Tabitha just looked up at the cow nervously before Maddie continued “She’ll get used to you in time… and she’s not as mean as she acts.” Sammi snorted at that comment, not bothering to look at them. This was fortunately finally followed by the moment of calm Tabitha needed to compose herself after that whirlwind of introductions as she pulled herself up and tried to regain her composure. “I-it’s nice to meet you all…” she finally stammered, trying to choose her words carefully “I… um… I hope that I will be useful to the team…?” she finally stuttered, hoping her phrasing choice wasn’t poor.
“I’m sure you will be dear.” Maddie said gently, bending down to pat her shoulder reassuringly and smiling to Tabitha… who felt smaller and younger than ever as she blushed shyly. Suddenly the puppy… er… Jules was at her side again, smiling up to her innocently “How come you’re so formal anyway?” he asked, somehow oblivious at how bluntly he’d just asked that rather awkward question. “We’re all friends here, you should just relax!” he added proudly, showing it was somehow his attempt to help her calm down or something. It was adorable… but incredibly embarrassing and socially awkward even by Tabitha’s standards.
“Er… um…” she stuttered, caught off guard by the sudden question and the innocent puppy looking up at her expectantly. “I… um… my family… is kinda high class and rich…” Tabitha found herself awkwardly answering before she could even really consider what she was saying “S-so this is how I was raised to talk to people… at the mansion I grew up in.” she finished, fervently praying that’d be enough to satisfy the puppy’s curiosity. And for a moment it seemed to as the next person to speak up was the teddiursa boy… Petie was it? “That kinda explains your outfit too…” he said, making Tabitha blush and look down at her clothes, wondering what he meant and dropping her guard for a second…
THEN Jules started asking the questions.
“You grew up in a mansion? What it like? Me and Petie have a friend who lives in one, her families rich too! Maybe your family knows her? What’s your family like? Can you tell us? Pleeeeeeeease?”
Tabitha went wide eyed at this barrage of questions and stuttered “Uh… uh… uh…” as her mind raced by at several miles a minute. Her family was infamous among most of the upper class not interested in “Acting like they’re entitled to” (her family’s term for abusing power, wealth, and people) so if she told them and it got back to their rich friend… would they find out her family’s a bunch of monsters? Would they find out even if she didn’t tell them? She’d hoped there wouldn’t be anyone around that’d recognize her last name for a least a month or two while she was here…
And if she did answer the questions what would happen? Her family was horrible and she knew it, that’s why Tabitha wanted to eventually bring their crimes to light. But if she shared it with them since they didn’t already know wouldn’t that be dragging them into it? She’d like to think they’d be beneath her family’s notice but she couldn’t be sure, they could be viciously petty at times. She’d just joined this team, she wasn’t even sure she could officially consider herself their friend yet… she didn’t want to ruin things with them this fast…
Suddenly a squeak from Jules snapped Tabitha out of her panic as she blinked to find the puppy being pulled away by his fluffy tail by Petie “Down Jules, too many questions too fast.” The teddiursa said as Jules pouted cutely “Sorry…” he mumbled, an apologetic look breaching his pout for a moment. “She’ll have plenty of time to tell us about herself later if she wants to.” Maddie suddenly said, her… for lack of a better term Tabitha could think of, maternal presence rendering any arguments moot “Now then since introductions are over why don’t we get this paperwork out of the way?” she suggested, smiling gently as Tabitha nodded in agreement if only cause it was a good excuse to get out of answering any more questions.
“Then afterwards we can get her suited up with a uniform!” Jules suddenly piped up, giggling eagerly as his tail wagged… which got a semi-silence from the rest of the team punctuated by a groan from Sammi. “Are we SERIOUSLY gonna keep those Poke Rangers inspired costumes?” the dratini asked prompting Jane to shrug “You didn’t complain when we first got them.” Tabitha just stood there, feeling like she was being left out of an in-joke, as Andrew sighed “C-cause t-they were b-better then w-what we have b-before… chuuuuuuuu…” which lead Sammi to snort again “Right, what pampers said… can’t we get SOMETHING better? Maybe if we tried the shellheads again…”
Before Tabitha could try and ask what ANY of that conversation meant Jules suddenly piped up “Maybe we could ask Rose to come up with something?” with what she assumed had to be his normal cheerfulness. Then Tabitha could just FEEL the room go cold as everyone, save for Maddie who’d decided to get the papers for her and Andrew to sign together during this, gave Jules a glare that made the puppy yip in surprise and hang his head timidly “Or maybe not…” he whimpered, blushing shyly as the debate about uniforms continued and Tabitha gave up trying to follow it.
“Here you go Tabitha, sign here and here please.”
To be honest the form and pen held out to her was a welcome sight for the Gothita as she took them from Maddie. This whole team was chaotic and different from anything she was used to… but… Tabitha tried not to blush as she signed the lines Maddie pointed out to her. Compared to how her family treated her and her time being alone with only Nanny and her maids to talk to… this was new, exciting, and she was honestly curious what might happen next. Was this what having friends is like? She couldn’t hide her smile at that thought…
Yes, Tabitha felt she could learn to like her new team… her new friends. She just wondered what her first adventure (should she call it that? She wasn’t quite sure…) with them might be…
**************************
“Fuck… FUCK… damn them all…”
Charlie cussed under his breath as he furiously scribbled on the note paper on his desk. The little magby had been brooding on his humiliation at the Pre-K auditions since it happened, planning and plotting on how to get even with them. This had left him in a fouler mood then normal even as he was putting the finishing touches on the last few bits of his plan to make Team Pre-K suffer for what happened to him. He would have preferred coming up with something that’d let him beat the shit out of every one of them personally and make them apologize and beg him for forgiveness… but this was probably good enough… for starters at least.
“Great… now I just have to find those idiots… then I can make Pre-K PAY for”
“… do you mind not talking to yourself? It’s rather disturbing to be honest.”
“Fuck off.”
“Just saying.”
Glaring at his shieldon dormmate as the dinosaur just shrugged and went back to whatever it was he was doing, Charlie didn’t really care to pay attention, the magby resumed writing down the remainder of his plan. The other problem with it was he didn’t how long it’d take… but that was a small sacrifice. Soon he’d have his revenge…
Then he’d figure out how to get even with that damn scrafty.
The End…?

PCA – Team Pre-K:
Replacement Playmate Part 5“So… we're just sitting here waiting for her to show up?"

The End…?
