Also, in the meantime games like Gnomoria and other far more easy to play knockoffs have come up, which makes me question whether its worth doing DF again

I mean, I've done all the big things.

I made a successful glass industry via lava furnaces and whatnot.

I made lava moats and fuck-you buttons (walled in courtyards at your main entrance that could be filled with water/lava)

I get that a lot of things have been improved - no doubt - but... ugh... I think rather play minecraft with mods these days.
