The story as I conceived it is that Tyrrlin has some ability to conjure flame in a mage-like sort of way, but the control is rather dicey especially since I like to imagine the character as still being mentally similar to your typical bird. Consequently after the experience of setting her own tail on fire she's mastered her control to the point where (naturally) making tails burst into flame is what you're *SUPPOSED* to do with this talent.
