Ruby’s first few days at the PCA had been quite an experience for the little poochyena. She loved her cousin dearly but she couldn’t help but think he had toned down the school and described it in broad strokes. It was way, way more frightening then he’d described. All the new scary mon she was meeting and the big campus she has to walk around… fortunately though she’d made a few friends who’d been helping her around and trying to make it less scary.
Petie had stuck around and the little teddy had been nice enough to introduce Ruby to his friend Jules. The little riolu had been as nice and friendly as Petie and was full of energy and enthusiasm that was really adorable… but… she still wasn’t sure. She still felt skittish being with them, what if they talked about stuff she didn’t know about? Or did things she couldn’t do? She didn’t want to be alienated or make them mad at her… so she tried to keep them at arms distance…
Then there were the friends her dear cousin Rex had introduced her to that were on his team. Toni was like Petie and Jules in that she was small… but the little gothita was much more serious then them and scared Ruby a little. Toni, Ruby wasn’t sure if she should call her by her nickname or not, was much more forceful and scary… so Ruby did what she thought was best and just agreed with her or kept quiet when she didn’t. Ruby could tell by Toni’s tone and expression she was doing something wrong though… maybe… she wasn’t sure…
Then there was Carrie… who was a bug and all bugs were scary to Ruby. The first time she’d met Carrie the yanma had swooped in and given Ruby a sudden hug that’d made the puppy need another dry diaper much to her embarrassment. She was trying to give the two a chance because they were Rex’s friends but Ruby couldn’t help but flinch every time Toni raised her voice any and Carrie made her knees knock together. Maybe things would get better with time… hopefully…
Of course, at the moment Ruby was in front of the school bulletin board reading off the list of weekly fights with dread, particularly the section that listed her name. Petie had once again joined her, apparently wanting to make sure she was okay since she’d been in the hall alone. For a moment there was silence till the little teddiursa spoke up.
“So Ruby, have you found out when your first match is going to be?”
“… u-uh huh…”
“ Can I see pwease?”
“O-okay Petie…”
“You’re up against… Rosalinda Richards? … never heard of her… sure you’ll do fine though.”
“………”
“… you’re nervous huh?”
“………….. y-yes…”
Scared stiff was more the right word. Ruby had always thought her grandfather had gone easier on her when he’d given her P.E. lessons or taught her how to fight. So the idea of facing somebody not using kiddie gloves in an actual match had her knees knocking together. Petie seemed to sense this as little paws wrapped around her waist in a reassuring hug “I’m sure you’ll do fine.” He said, giving her a beaming smile with his babyish little face “Don’t worry about it okay? Just go out and do your best… sides, you’ve got a couple days to prepare.” He added, pointing out the date next to the match up.
“……..” all Ruby could do in response was let out a nervous whine as she shifted on her paws more. With how scared she felt she was likely going to have to avoid drinking too much during the daytime… she already had more accidents due to all the new mon and scary stuff at the PCA then she wanted. Petie seemed to notice his attempts to lift her spirits were falling flat though and made a little pouty lipped sad face that tugged on her heartstrings a little before his face suddenly lit up with an idea.
“I know! We can ask Rose to help! She trains me so I’m sure she could think of something that’d help you feel more confident about your first match!”
Ruby blinked at the suggestion. Rose was Petie’s kangaskahn older sister, though how Ruby hadn’t felt confident enough to ask, and was HUGE. She was tall enough it made Ruby feel completely overwhelmed and too little to even try to respond or answer any of the questions she’d been asked… at first at least. After Petie asked Rose to tone it down though she’d seemed to be nice and friendly like her little brother… so Ruby was willing to trust her. The kangaskhan was big enough Ruby couldn’t help but think Rose might know better than her like adults did… so that idea might be okay…
“… w-well… i-if she’s o-okay with it…”
*********************
“Rose?”
“One moment… there~ How does it fit Ruby?”
“… o-okay…”
“Rose?”
“Yes Petie?”
“Why are you doing… making costumes, instead of… you know… training her to fight or something like that?”
It was after school and Ruby was currently at Petie’s house after having been invited and unceremoniously carried to it by Ruby after she and Petie asked the kangaskhan for her help. The past few hours or so had been in Rose’s room with the nervous puppy trying to stand still as she was measured and used as a dressing dummy by the kangaskhan. Petie being polite enough to keep his eyes closed or covered during all of this even as he’d sat on Rose’s bed while his sister worked. Ruby meanwhile had just tried to go along with it and not give Rose any trouble, answer any questions the kangaskhan had asked as best she could, and generally try and keep her knees from knocking together out of nervousness.
Right now they were on the third outfit Rose had made for her in the short time Ruby had been there… though… the first two outfits had been… odd to say the least. They seemed to be more frills and prettiness then actual function for the arena, though they had been pretty. “Well Petie…” Rose said as she worked to sew a violet colored trim to the blue coat like top she’d put Ruby in “She already has somebody who’s training her and teaching her how to fight… you said it was your grandpa, right?” Rose asked, looking up to Ruby’s face as the puppy blushed and nodded “Okay then, I don’t wanna step on her grandpa’s toes any so I can’t tutor her like I do you… so this is the next best thing!” The kangaskhan finished as she pulled the needle through and tied the string off. Petie was unimpressed.
“… next best thing? How?”
“Weeeeeell~” Rose giggled, smiling coyly at that question as she ruffled around in a box she’d pulled out of her closet earlier “The way I see it no matter what happens if her first match… the one thing she DOESN’T want happening is to accidently reveal she’s wearing diapers to a whole audience who might laugh at her…” the mental image was enough to make Ruby’s knees knock a little as the puppy whined. Rose seemed to miss this as she pulled what looked like huge buttons out of the box and continued “Like a certain teddiursa I know and have designed costumes for before… right Teddy-chan?”
Petie’s cheeks went bright pink at Rose’s teasing tone and comments as the Kangaskhan hummed softly and gently started to stitch the giant buttons she’d pulled out to the front of the coat she’d made Ruby. “I knew I’d find a use for these Eviolite buttons eventually… just hold still aaaaaaand… there we got!” Rose chirped, pulling the final thread through and tying it off. She grinned proudly and adjusted the coat a bit before dusting her hands off “Done! I think this one will be perfect for the arena!” Rose cheered, beaming down at Ruby as the puppy just fidgeted nervously “Come and take a look!” the kangaskahn insisted, getting up off her knees and ushering Ruby over to a full length mirror.
Standing in front of the mirror Ruby blushed a bit as she looked over the costume. It was fairly simple, compared to the first two tries anyway. The main part of it was a formal looking coat and tails with a pale blue body with violet trim, a dark blue collar and short puffy sleeves, and violet frills on the opening of the sleeves. It looked like it’d be perfect for a prom or something formal like that. The row of three large Eviolite buttons Rose had sewn on went right down the middle of the coat and the idea was quite clever… at least Ruby thought so anyway. Though she really hoped they really did help protect her… she didn’t like pain at all.
Rose had just finished putting Ruby’s hair up in pigtails tied off with dark blue ribbons in big bows, to complete the look or something, which left Ruby looking at the last piece of the outfit. The INCREDIBLY puffy dark blue pants that barely reached her knees and had violet frills at the leg openings. Biting her lip a little and suppressing a whimper Ruby wasn’t really sure how these were supposed to help hide her diapers at all… as the puppy let out a surprised squeak as a smiling Rose tugged on the pantaloons. “See? They aren’t going to slide down or anything like that…” she said as Ruby realized they hadn’t budged an inch, Rose continued with a grin “Just tell people they’re bloomers or pantaloons and you’re making a fashion choice, that should make them not give it a second though!” she finished, grinning proudly at her work and idea.
Nodding Ruby sort of understood what Rose said, it helped put her mind at ease about the pants for the moment at least. Getting back up Rose took a step back and smiled down to Ruby "Why don't you walk about a bit, maybe do some stretches, and see how it feels?" she asked as Ruby blushed and timidly nodded. She started with simply walking, though it was a bit more like toddling due to how nervous she was, around the room while Petie & Rose watched. Then she moved into some of the simple exercises her grandpa usually had her do like hopping in place, doing squats, and ending it all with a few graceful twirls.
She was a little surprised to find the outfit didn’t hinder her motion at all… and blushed furiously as she realized Rose was clapping a little for her. “Nice~” the kangaskhan said “Your grandpa knew what he was doing when he trained you~” she commented as Ruby felt herself blushing even more. Meanwhile Petie just looked confused as tilted his head “How come her diaper didn’t crinkle and make a lot of noise when she did all that?” he asked, apparently talking from experience. The teddy let out an adorable squeak of surprise as Rose lifted him off the bed slightly with one hand and patted his bottom with the other “Cause cloth doesn’t crinkle baby bro~” she teased, the crinkling sound the pats made on Petie’s padded bottom proving her point.
“W-w-well…” Petie stuttered as he was set back on the bed, his cheeks matching Ruby’s with his own pink blush “A-a-at least it works better than the first t-two…” he managed to squeak out, still adorably embarrassed, as he glanced over to the two outfits laying on the bed. One was a pastel yellow dress and bloomers combo with a short, spikey skirt like a jolteons mane and the other was a soft pink flower or flower petal themed gown and bloomers combo. Rose just shrugged “Well she could wear them if she ever decides to go to a formal party or something… you could accompany her in your little sailor suit too~” she teased as Petie pouted and blushed, folding his arms and huffing… though it was obvious by the atmosphere it was just playful teasing.
Watching the two siblings banter back and forth Ruby was working on building up her courage. Taking a deep breath Ruby let out a little squeaking noise that she’d intended to be her asking to get their attention. Luckily it worked either way and the two looked to the blushing puppy as Ruby felt her knees knock together a little. “T-thank you.” She finally squeaked out, blushing more as she did before trying to squeeze out the full sentence “T-the outfits a-are lovely, thank y-you for you h-help. T-thank you f-for e-everything” She said, feeling a little more confident after having managed to properly thank the two… which vanished in a gasp of surprise as she found Rose scooping her up effortlessly.
“Don’t worry about it, I’m just happy to get to help!” Rose said cheerfully as she carried Ruby over to the bed and sat her down next to Petie, the blushing puppy looking down at her feet timidly. “… r-really… t-thank you…” Ruby managed to mumble with the last of her courage, cheeks almost glowing pink by now. The kangaskhan chuckled, smiling down at the puppy “And don’t worry about that match of yours coming up, okay? Just go and do your best~ Me, Petie, and Jules will be in the stands cheering you on!” she declared, giving a big grin as Ruby nodded, wondering if she’d actually reach the point she could blush any harder.
“Oh and I’ll try and talk Jules into NOT showing up in his cheerleading outfit.” Petie suddenly commented, giggling as he wrapped his arms around Ruby’s middle in a surprise hug. The pupyp tried to say something but between embarrassment and confusion at Petie’s comment it came out as adorable baby babble. At the very least she knew that yes, she could still blush harder even after all that.
******************
Ruby stepped into the arena, her knees knocking as she tried to keep from needing a dry diaper before the match had even started. She didn’t think the arena would be so… big, though she’d been told it was one of the school’s smaller arenas, or that it’d have so many people in it. She could see Petie, Jules, and Rose in the bleachers waving to her (the riolu fortunately NOT sporting a cheerleader outfit) and it gave her a tiny bit of comfort. Like the good luck lick her cousin Rex had given her in the locker room (and that her cheek was still damp from). The lick had made her giggle a little and feel better… but that went out the window as she nervously toddled to the middle of the arena, feeling all the eyes on her and trying not to break down crying in fear.
Luckily the referee wasn’t scary looking… in fact he kinda reminded her of grandpa. He was an older looking bibarel with a short, well groomed mustache over his buck teeth and a few distinguished looking winkles under his eyes. He was portly and well-built but seemed to fill the uniform he was in well and came off looking gruff but not aggressive or overly mean instead of silly. Despite this Ruby could feel her legs tremble a little as he looked her over before moving the mic away from his mouth to let out a light “Relax, it’s your first match. You’re not even in the major stuff yet.” Which made Ruby blush and look down a little, risking a glance up to see the ref hadn’t put his mic back yet. In fact he was looking at the other end of the arena impatiently as he grumbled.
“… where’s the other one? I know she showed up an hour ago to set up som”
The ref was cut off mid “Something” by what could only be described as fast paced, rock-n-roll inspired... mariachi music? Ruby could only listen in stare in awed confusion as a girl rushed out from the other arena entrance and struck a dramatic, over-the top pose, a huge grin plastered across her face. It was a hawlucha girl with a medium size and build that looked decently toned, a bright look in her eye, and… one heck of a weird costume. “S-sir? I-is there a s-show before the m-match?” Ruby asked, wondering what the strange girl was doing there “B-because n-nobody t-told me t-there was…”
“Me neither kid…” the bibarel groaned, rubbing between his eyes in frustration “Gonna be one of THOSE matches, I can tell already…” The girl was wearing a festive bright green short sleeved dress like outfit that barely reached her knees and had yellow splashes decorating and trimming it along with a weird loincloth accessory hanging in front of the dress from what looked like a wrestling belt. She also had a huge bright orange cape that was probably twice her size, brushed against her ankles, and was held around her neck by a clasp. Looking again Ruby could see the outfit was the same colors as her orange plume and markings, green face “Mask”, and yellow feet… but Ruby had no clue what she was doing there. Wasn’t her opponent supposed to be here by now…?
After a few minutes of doing incredibly bombastic and silly looking poses the bird suddenly stepped up and flared the cape out so it’d billow behind her before shouting “HELLO THERE EEEEEEEEVERYBODY!!!” her voice might have been surprisingly pleasant and musical… if she wasn’t shouted at the top of her lungs to the point the bibarel had to wince and put his microphone back on his collar to keep the feedback it caught from blowing out any ears. Ruby meanwhile squeaked and winced, holding her little puppy ears at the sudden shouting.
The girl seemed oblivious to this as she just went right on shouting “I’M ROSALINDA RICHARDS! ARE YOU READY FOR A FIIIIIIGHT!” she shouted, apparently trying to pep up the crowd… who looked just as lost as Ruby had been a moment ago. Rosalinda kept screaming out her mic-less mic performance as the puppy blushed and twiddled her fingers, horribly embarrassed that she hadn’t realized Rosalinda was her opponent. Ruby just stood there being embarrassed… till something lightly tapped her head making her jump and yip in surprise and panic as she looked up.
“You gonna say anything? I finished my pre-fight bit so it’s all yours~” Rosalinda said, grinning to the puppy. Meanwhile Ruby stood there too confused to even try to argue. The bird girl was probably only a couple inches taller than the puppy but between that and the shouting it was more than enough to in intimidate Ruyb as she held her arms in front of herself in a fetal posture, lightly bumping her index fingertips together nervously. After a moment of silence she managed to let out a tiny and soft “t-to a good m… m-match?” that was almost too quiet for Rosalinda or the ref to hear her, let alone anyone in the audience to hear her.
“Um… no… I don’t think that’ll work…” the hawlucha girl said, rubbing her chin thoughtfully before snapping her claws “Wait! I know!” she looked to the ref eagerly and opened her mouth to say something… as the bibarel cut her off with a glare as he bluntly said “No she may not borrow my mic, besides we need to get this match started.” Which made the bird girl pout huffily as Ruby was relieved she wasn’t going to have to talk into a mic. Unfortunately this relief was short lived as the ref cleared his throat and started using a more formal, commanding tone.
“This match will be between Rosalinda Richards and Ruby Marsters, are both fighters ready?”
“LETS DO THIS!” Rosalinda suddenly shouted, jumping back and striking a pose with her legs spread shoulder length apart, one foot a bit forward, and her claws bared… while nearly tripping over her cape in doing so. Ruby yipped in panic again as she tried to remember her battling pose but between her nervousness and embarrassment she couldn’t quite remember and ended up standing with her head lowered shyly, her elbows held in close to her body, and her legs slightly bent inward like a little girl who knew she was going to get scolded. Then she realized the bibarel was looking at her and waiting for her to confirm she was ready making Ruby blush even more as she timidly nodded. This was enough for the ref as he held his hand up.
“Alright… BEGIN!!”
Before Ruby could do anything Rosalinda bent her legs a little… and HURLED herself incredibly high in the air, her cape trailing behind her majestically. As Ruby stared in awe the hawlucha seemed to just hang there in mid-air for a moment before flapping her arms and suddenly swooping down on the puppy, twisting forward so she’d land chest first on Ruby with a Flying Press. Meanwhile Ruby could see with her mental eye as she stood there, deerling-in-the-headlights look on her face, as she looked up at the rapidly approaching falling bird…
“Ru-by! Rex cheer you!”
Hearing her cousin’s voice from the stands was enough to snap Ruby out of her stupefied state as she threw herself to the left just as Rosalinda crashed down behind her with an undignified sounding thud. Not that Ruby was really paying attention to the noise as her dodge had become a roll causing her to tumble to a stop. As she got to her feet slightly dazed muscle memory from her grandpa’s training took over as she found herself slipping into her battle stance, her legs slightly bent and one put forward as well as both her hands forward held up in front of her, her right outstretched and her left bent slightly. Trying to calm herself down and focus on the fight Ruby looked for where Rosalinda had gotten to…
And found Rosalinda where she’d crashed down, trying to pull her beak out of the dirt floor of the arena. Blinking and staring at the scene in confusion Ruby’s guard relax a little as she stuttered out “A-are you okay?” as she watched the girl finally yank herself free. Shaking her head to clear it, due the odd separation of beak and mouth her species had she didn’t need to spit any dirt out, she grinned to Ruby “I’m fine~” and with that she suddenly cartwheeled and HURLED herself at Ruby with a display of Acrobatics. Ruby yipped in panic, breaking her stance as she ducked and covered to try and dodge the attack.
… which never came as instead she heard a surprised, almost chicken like squawk followed by a tumbling thud coming to a stop next to her. After a few moments Ruby timidly opened one of her eyes and, not getting struck suddenly, opened the other before lifting her head and looking around. She wasn’t quite sure what had happened but judging by the fact Rosalinda was currently flat on her back next to the puppy, her cape tangled up on the bird’s clawed feet and legs, she must have snagged it mid flip and ended up crashing. “Maybe my bros had a point about the cape…” Ruby could hear Rosalinda muttering as she worked to free her feet.
Ruby stood there watching for a moment before timidly padding over to Rosalinda “D-do you… n-need help?” she squeaked out nervously. Which made the bird stop what she was doing to just stare at the puppy in confusion "Uh... er... I think that's against the rules... um... we're in a fight right?” she asked, tilting her head a little, before giving a big confident grin and adding “Just wait or attack, I'll be free in a minute then the fireworks start!" as she pumped one of her arms in the air before going back to trying to free her legs from the cape.
Stepping back a little Ruby blushed and watch, her triangular ears twitching a little as she could hear the slightest murmurings of confusion from the crowd. These murmurings became clearer as the hawlucha finally managed to free herself and leapt to her feet. "Why didn't the poochyena attack?" and "She hasnt' launched an attack yet, doesn't she know how to fight?" came through clearly making Ruby blush in shame and look down for a moment before deciding to try and get serious. She pulled herself back into her fighting stance and readied her first move… as Rosalinda wasn’t in front of her anymore.
“RUBY! LOOK OUT!”
It was Petie’s voice, though the puppy didn’t really have time to register that fact as she leapt back to avoid whatever she was supposed to look out for… just as Rosalinda landed feet first where Ruby had been with a powerful Bounce. Unfortunately the hawlucha bent her knees and bounced out of the Bounce, launching herself into Ruby with what seemed to a horizontal Flying Press. Having barely just landed from her first dodge there was no way for Ruby to dodge this attack in time as Rosalinda crashed into the puppy and sent Ruby flying back.
Ruby yelped in pain as she was thrown back and tumbled to a stop… before blinking in confusion. That had hurt… but it was nowhere near as bad as she’d imagined it would be. Climbing to her feet and biting her lip to keep from crying she found she was relatively okay, which just confused her more. It was her first match and all but that was a part fighting type attack so why wasn’t she reeling in pain? Suddenly she recalled the buttons Rose had sewn onto her costume, they’d been made of Eviolite… which meant she was getting a big defense boost! She’d have to thank Rose again later…
As she snapped out of her thoughts with a yip of panic, leaping to the side to avoid Rosalinda’s attack as the hawlucha swooped in with a Fly powered kick. The bird skidded on her claws, nearly tripping over her cape, and staggered leaving herself open. Seeing her opportunity and remembering her grandpa’s lessons Ruby leapt forward and lacked onto Rosalinda’s arm with a Bite… and a very apologetic look since this felt wrong to do even in a match. The hawlucha let out a chicken like squawk of surprise and flailed her arm as Ruby did her best to hold on and gnaw on the limb for added damage. Finally a claw shoving on her nose hard forced her to let go as she staggered back, ending up on her bottom, as Rosalinda leapt away.
“… right… biting’s not illegal in matches…” the hawlucha mumbled, rubbing her arm as Ruby regained her footing. Rosalinda grinned as she looked up, getting back to her feet… and promptly squawked again as Ruby kicked a Sand-Attack into her face. Ruby watched the bird furiously rub at her eyes to clear the sand out of them before rushing in, aiming to land another Bite attack… and ended up nipping at air and skidding to a stop on all fours as Rosalinda launched herself up high into the air. Ruby had to squint to see but it looked like Rosalinda still had her eyes squinted shut even as she was trying to fly…
Which explained why she crashed down to the ground in a clumsy heap without even being remotely close to Ruby, the puppy wasn’t even sure whether the hawlucha had tried to use Bounce or Fly. Ruby stood there, shifting nervously on her feet and looking around. She wasn’t quite sure WHAT to do here… should she attack… or maybe help Rosalinda up? She whined a little, hoping for somebody to tell her what she should be doing… as the crowds in the bleachers started yelling for the two girls to fight again making Ruby blush in shame. She could just barely here her cousin and friends cheering her as well but the rest of the crowd drowned it out.
Deciding to try a Sand Attack again Ruby tried to control the deep blush on her cheeks as she finally turned her attention back to her opponent… and found Rosalinda filling up her vision as the bird flipped at her with an Acrobatics. Letting out a yelp of surprise Ruby tried to dodge but cried out in pain as one of Rosalinda’s feet caught her side and sent her sprawling. Apparently the bird type was still having trouble seeing since she hadn’t hit the puppy center mass… but that was the last though in Ruby’s head as she held her side and bit back tears at the pain. The Eviolite buttons were doing their job… but she wasn’t really good at taking hits. She didn’t have any real past experience with them at all…
Wincing as she struggled to sit up Ruby noticed the shadow that’d fallen over her and immediately snapped her head up towards the sky. Just in time to see Rosalinda plummeting down at her with a Flying Press, the hawlucha’s eyes now clear enough that it was obvious she wouldn’t miss. Ruby’s mind raced on what to do as panic took over and her body moved reflexively… as she shut her eyes and let out a high-pitched sounding shriek of fear in the form of her Uproar attack.
Seconds passed as Ruby wasn’t sure what was happening due to her shut eyes and her own scream drowning out the crowd noise (it probably would have her recoiling in pain with her sensitive puppy ears if she hadn’t been the one making the noise)… and suddenly her world was stars, shaking, and pain as something slammed down hard on her head and upper body. Ruby wasn’t sure if she’d opened her eyes or not due to how bad her vision was swimming and her head was spinning but she could sorta feel whatever had landed on her shifting around as the weight lifted off the puppy. Had she been knocked out by that blow? Ruby honestly couldn’t tell she was so badly dazed as she could hear noises somewhere on the horizon of awareness.
It felt like the world was moving in fast forward around her and she was just watching… or maybe she’d slowed down? Ruby honestly couldn’t tell as she struggled to remain awake, to force her vision to focus, or to make sense of what the distant voices she was hearing were saying… but she was barely managing the first one and the last two seemed to be a lost cause. She thought there was somebody next to her for a moment… then there seemed to be shouting and a dull, distant noise that made her head her and somebody else shouting. Ruby didn’t have any idea what was going on even as she felt herself being picked up, her body struggling weakly without any input from her detached feeling mind, and placed on something softer then the ground.
The pattern of swirling lights overhead seemed to change as she found herself moving… but she was flat on her back wasn’t she? Ruby didn’t know anymore as the thought of closing her eyes and just fully passing out, if she wasn’t already, became more inviting. Maybe if she did the pain would stop, her whole body ached now… her head especially. Did battles always hurt this much? The light seemed to change again as there was another voice, this one just vaguely on the cusp of sounding familiar. Ruby debated just closing her eyes again as she felt herself being moved onto something else soft. What was going on…?
Suddenly there was a stingy, hurtie pain that made Ruby yelp and struggle… before blinking and realizing her head had mostly cleared and the world seemed to have gone back to normal. Except for her still being incredibly sore all over and the nasty stingy pain still lingering about making her whine and whimper. “Sorry, it’ll pass in a moment though.” The first clear voice she’d heard in a few minutes (was it a few minutes? She wasn’t sure) assured her. It was a familiar voice too as Ruby looked up to find the gardevoir lady who’d changed her diapers before smiling down at her, what was her name? Kallista if Ruby remembered right…
It was then the puppy noticed the spray bottle of Potion in the psychic types hands “This stings, but it’ll help you feel better afterwards, okay?” Kallista said as she began to lightly sprits some of the sore, achy areas on Ruby’s body. Replacing the ache and hurt with that stingy pain that made the puppy bite her lip and whimper. What happened? How’d she get her? Her head still felt funny from earlier… she’d… she’d been in a match, right? Was it over? Her head was clearer but it was still hard for her to piece together exactly what happened.
“Are you alright? Anywhere else that hurts?” a gentle hand on her shoulder jarred Ruby out of struggling to piece together her memories as she looked up at Kallista’s concerned face. Blushing the puppy shook her head “N-no… j-just… um… w-what happened?” she stuttered, her confusion mixing with embarrassment to make even asking simple questions difficult “T-the match… d-did I…?” she stammered out, whining a little as the psychic type gave her an apologetic look.
“I’m sorry, but you lost…” Kallista said, though her voice and tone were soothing and consoling like when Ruby’s mother had tried to make the puppy feel better that time she skinned her knee “I wasn’t there to see it myself but I was told your Uproar just made your opponent lose control of her move and… well… sit on you leaving you too dazed to continue.” The gardevoir explained as Ruby nodded softly. She wasn’t too upset about losing, to be honest she hadn’t even expected herself to last very long in the ring… but she had trouble believing that last move was just an accident. Surely her opponent hadn’t just gotten lucky, had they?
Looking around Ruby saw she was in a nurse’s office, sitting on one of the beds. Kallista seemed to not have anything else pressing to tell her about as the gardevoir went about giving her a check over to make sure all Ruby’s injuries had been doused with potion, which left the puppy to her thoughts. That’d been her first real taste of battle… and she wasn’t sure she liked it. She didn’t like getting hurt… well… okay the pain wasn’t as bad as she thought it’d be but she still didn’t like getting hit by those moves at all. Moreover she REALLY didn’t like having to hit others. What if she accidentally hurt someone? Ruby felt guilty enough just having done an attack on that girl she couldn’t imagine what she’d do if that bite or uproar had seriously hurt her…
Maybe… maybe she should quit battling? She knew a little bit about the other majors at the PCA… maybe one of them would be better for her… but… she wasn’t sure. Ruby felt like her head was spinning again as she tried to figure out what she should do. Making it more complicated was this little feeling she couldn’t deny. Past all the panic, uncertainty, and chaos of the match… Ruby had actually had a little fun out there in the arena. M-maybe… maybe you didn’t have to try to hurt people too bad either… looking over her own injuries Ruby was realizing that, past the stingy potion, they were likely minor. At this point she had no idea WHAT to do… should she quit the fighting major? Should she stay? She just didn’t know…
Suddenly a gentle tap on her shoulder snapped Ruby out of her thought as she timidly glanced up at Kallista’s gentle face. “You’re about to have some visitors.” The gardevoir said, her tone one of slight amusement. Before Ruby could do anymore then be confused by that comment the door to the nurse’s office was knocked open as her quadruped older cousin Rex burst in. His gothita friend Toni riding him like a pony and trying to hang on. A task she failed at as Rex reared up, placing his forepaws on the bed Ruby was sitting on and nuzzled the little puppy as she could see Toni tumbling off onto her bottom. Ruby was a bit too preoccupied to pay attention though as she giggled and blushed under her cousin’s attention.
“Ruby okay?” was the first question Rex asked and after she gave a little nod in the affirmative he began to bombard her with questions as he lovingly nuzzled her. "Ruby do good out" "Chicken just lucky" "Rex help Ruby es-tronger" he cheerfully told her but the last one "Ruby cheer happy" made her blush bright pink. Most people might not understand what Rex meant but Ruby could understand him perfectly. "Ruby, cheer up! You should be happy!" he wanted her to be happy for how she did in the match. All Ruby could feel though was embarrassed as her blush reached the jewel like redness she was named for.
She just stared shyly down at her feet as Rex continued to try and cheer her up as Ruby looked for something to do or say. Luckily her wandering eyes spied Toni. Apparently Kallista had helped her back to her feet. Looking to the gothita Ruby was about to apologize for Rex unintentionally dropping her but Toni beat her to the punch by saying “You’ve got pretty good reflexes, dodging those attacks out there.” Which just made Ruby blush and fidget more, the embarrassment having completely pushed her earlier indecision about battling completely out of her mind as she sat there staring at her feet.
Suddenly the door knocked open again as Petie and Jules scurried in with Rose bring up the rear and shutting the door behind them. “Ruby!” Petie squeaked as he waddled over to the bed the puppy was sitting on as fast as he could before trying to climb up… which proved to be a struggle with how much he was hurrying till Jules lent him a hand by getting under him and pushing him up onto the bed. “Y-you did great!” he said, struggling get his balance back before resorting to crawling over to hug Ruby “You did great for your first match!” The praise and the hug just made Ruby blush more but between her cousin’s nuzzles from earlier and Petie’s hug just now she couldn’t help but give a timid smile as she hugged Petie back.
“Wait… you guys were in the audience too?” Toni said, apparently surprised by the arrival of Petie’s group. “Yep!” Jules said, opting not to climb onto the bed after Petie “Ruby is our friend to!” he declared proudly with a giggle and his usual enthusiasm. Slipping past the others Rose stood on Rex’s other side, smiling down at the puppy on the bed. “Good job on your first match~” she said encouragingly, making Ruby blush even more, before continuing “Hope the costume was okay through all that… and did the eviolite buttons help any? You did take some hard hits out there.” The question brought back vague memories of the pain to Ruby… but was getting harder to remember the feeling, especially with the tingling, stinginess of the potion still fresh in her mind. Still she needed to answer Rose.
“T-they h-helped a-a-a lot, t-thank you… Oh! T-the costume was f-fine too…”
After looking at Ruby’s outfit for a moment Toni looked up at Rose "I knew that design style was familiar." She said as Rose just smiled proudly, apparently quite happy to have her handy-work recognized. “Yep~” Rose nodded, turning to look down at Toni “I made it for Ruby to keep her padding hidden, let her look stylish in the match, aaaaaand" the kangaskhan made a big production of tapping one of the oversized buttons on the front of Ruby’s coat, making the puppy yip in surprise “Be functional to boot~" She finished, looking like the only thing keeping her from taking a bow was the fact the bed Ruby was sitting on would be in the way.
"Thank help, Rose" Rex said smiling up to the kangaskhan as his tail wagged happily "Ruby very impor-tant to Rex," he added for emphasis as Rose nodded in understanding "Of course, she's your cousin after all...” Rose said, stepping around Rex and the two tiny mon on the floor “Anyway I’m always happy to help a friend of my baby bro~" she added, taking advantage of her new spot to ruffle Petie’s head fur making his squeak and blush adorably with embarrassment. Ruby smiled a little at the adorable sight, glad to not be the only one in the room blushing for once.
A sudden clap got everyone’s attention as they looked up to find Kallista standing in front of them all. “Since you happened to mention baby…” the gardevoir said, a mildly amused smile on her face as if she knew something the rest of the room didn’t “I think this’d be a good time to bring up that I’m fairly certain there’s a few babies in this room who could use a fresh diaper.” She finished as Ruby blushed furiously, realizing she must mean her and Petie… till the gardevoir lifted a blushing Toni up and sat her on the other side of Petie. “Now then, who’d like to go first?” Kallista asked as her eyes trailed across the three little ones…
Ruby sat there for a moment in confusion before realizing what this had to mean. In shock she leaned forward to look around Petie at Toni… to find the gothtita was sporting the same look of shock and surprise the poochyena had as she leaned around Petie to look at Ruby. They opened their mouths at the same time and the words tumbled across their lips in perfect stereo “Wait, you too!?” as Petie just groaned and laid back while the girls stared at each other in shock. Sighing the teddiursa couldn’t keep from adding one comment to this situation…
“Well, this just got awkward….”
The End.

PCA – Amazing Fighting PuppyRuby’s first few days at the PCA had been quite an experience for the little poochyena.
The End.
