Well essentially she's the sole survivor of a planet called Cerinia (for reasons Nintendo hasn't explained, it was destroyed).

She first appeared in Starfox Adventures looking for answers as to what happened, but ended up trapped in a crystal (irony alert) while a dead enemy of Starfox tried to drain her life force in order to resurrect himself.

Eventually, Fox McCloud frees her and she joins the team, while at the same time falling in love with McCloud.

Thats the short version.
