recently i made a group of animal-fetishes. a fetish is a little animal carving (usually found in Native-American medicine) that was thought to possess the soul, spirit, or energy of the animal it represented. the person who owns the fetish will offer it food, drink, prayer, and sometimes even jewelry, in exchange for its protection.
i made these fetishes for my brothers' and father's historical re-enactment group for them to sell. *I AM OFFERING CARVED FETISH COMMISSIONS, IF YOU ARE INTERESTED*
*~~*
the horse was in the middle of my carving session, and was one of the most difficult pieces for me to complete. at first i thought i was supposed to carve an Eagle, but the animal kept protesting. finally i let my carving tools do what they would, and Horse came out!
i am very attracted to this horse, and i think that Horse might have a message for me in the near future. i have already decided that if this piece doesn't sell i will keep it for myself, and then pass it on to whomever needs it when the time is right.
anyway!
Horse represents protection from all of life's problems, but this horse protects against physical harm in particular, it represents healing, both emotional and physical, and tenacity despite the mounting odds against it.

PLEASE NOTE: while i did do research on how Zuni animal fetishes are made, and some of their meanings, i did not take the meanings directly from any book, website, or other source. i took the meanings from what i know of the animal - and from the message i got from the carving itself, while making it.
AS WELL - please do not purchase a fetish to replace a tried-and-true therapy. if you are sick with a physical or mental illness, a fetish will only enhance the treatment you are already receiving from your doctor, therapist, psychologist, etc. so, for example, if you've been diagnosed with terminal cancer, don't just buy a white bear fetish and expect everything to be okay. please proceed with your treatment, and use the fetish as a little extra "boost", not a "suppliment".

I'd think that, too. especially since I felt it the very first time I picked up that shard of soapstone... back in schoon they made us carving animals out of wood blocks, without much choice on matter, species, and pose. then the teacher cut out the coarse for out of the wood, and we started.
I never liked the results, they looked artifical and lifeless throughout.
the only animal I liked was a large spider soldered together from soft-iron threads to accompany the fly my big bro made three years ago. :)
hm, I wonder what the artist saw in that piece of ivory before he cut out a lion-man out of it, over 30.000 years ago in a cave here in southern germany...
