Kind of, their the sign of a magic he was gifted with from birth. They basically change shape and position depending on spells his casting, brightness with the amount of magic he's drawing on and colour depending on mood. While it makes him powerful, anyone who knows how to read them pretty much knows exactly what he's doing, not that many can read them though :P
Yeah.. you're pretty trying xD XD. Actually with lighting the thing you need to stress is contrast, really. On your own, might I suggest, doing some B/W pieces of characters lit by a single light source in near strict Black an white, just to give you practice to be BOLD with shadows, maybe?
