Actually, I just used the vertex of a safety pin.
At first I used a mechanical pencil, but it wouldn't pick up enough, and it was leaving graphite lines.
All of this came from a scratch not even two milimeters long.

If you're usign a small amount like I did, then a thick blunt point of anythign really would work.
Unless you're workign with a bigger pool, I don't think a brush would be very good.
