"Why did you kill them?"
She had that look on her face, the one she seldom wore, but when it took over her normally smiling and lighthearted features, there could only be one thing she was thinking about. The look was getting more and more commonplace. I didn't like it.
I asked the question many times, I always got the same answer. I thought maybe if I put some sternness into my voice, I'd get a different result.
"I don't know," she said into her arm, eyes distant.
Guess not.
"No reason?"
"No reason. Well... no. No reason. I did it because it felt right. It was the only way."
I shifted my weight. I didn't like that answer, but this would be the third time she'd said it. What bothered me most was that she honestly believed it.
"Why? They loved you."
She drew her other arm to the opposite shoulder, resting her chin on her thin forearms. The warm breeze from the fans tousled her curly hair gently. I knew her tells; she was shifting too because I made her uncomfortable. She didn't want to talk about this now. I couldn't blame her, I suppose.
"I'll kill you too, someday," she said quietly.
I looked at her. She was serious, but her eyes would not meet mine.
"I don't know when, but it'll be someday," she continued. "I won't want to, I don't want to now, but I'll know when the time comes. It's how it always is."
She rolled her head, her eyebrows arching as her eyes locked to mine. "But until then, I will be the best I can be for you. That's also how it always is."
I rested on the rail, opposite the way she was and facing the other side. Our shoulders were touching, and I wondered if she was a bad or evil person. It was hard for me to tell; there was no malice in her words. It was like a duty, something she felt she had to fulfill.
