If I hadn't gotten into the Artz, I'd likely have gone into Iceland's traditional work for second sons - serving on a ship of some stripe. Fishing boats, trading vessels, coast guard, etc. Icelanders are seafarers. They love them their ships.
If you'd made a different decision, back in your youth, you could be a completely different person by now. Interesting thought, ain't it?

I happen to be of Icelandic heritage and I do understand the love for the working boats. But I also have the love for the things that fly as well old aircraft and the classic aircraft keep my mind alive but it's the homebuilt craft that make my heart sing. I think with us Icelanders we like to travel and to know what's on the other side of the hill.
I often muse on what my life would be like if I decided to join the US Navy or Merchant Marine. Most likely I'd be one of those types who couldn't cope with the harsh life of months at sea and hard work, and come away detesting anything to do with ships and the ocean. Either that, if I became a Mechanic Mate and kept myself busy learning the trade of keeping the ship's machinery going, and worked my way up to Chief engineer on a commercial vessel, I'd probably see the light of day most infrequently, and love it.
