Yet another Mastodon! 8D This was East Coast Line's first 4-8-0 of ther 20th century, and is essentially their equivilant tot the N&W M or SP TW series. They were originally built with Stephenson valve gear, with the piston valves turned inward like this: http://www.steamlocomotive.com/mast.....n229-weber.jpg But many like #727 were rebuilt with Baker gear, normally positioned piston valves, and roller bearings in the 30s and 40s. They were mixed traffic engines, intended to run anywhere on the system, and from the late 30s on were mostly used on branch lines. Nearly 300 were constructed, and at least 40 were still operable in the 80s.
